Hey guys. My name is Lorenzo Lakay, im from Cape Town, South Africa. Im currently a Freelance creative.
Stance in South Africa is growing pretty well. Real wheels and air lift is slowly but surely becoming the way forward for many around here. The exchange rate is brutal for us to import things so we have to make due with what we have most of the time. To check out some Cape Town cars: capestance.com
Ive been trolling the forum for a few years now and im pretty amped to finally start my own thread. The Jetta wasn't exactly what I wanted. I was searching for B5 1.8 NA avant but that didn't go too well. Then had my eyes set on a 89 Mk2 golf. A narrow bumper 1.6 csl. That didn't work out either. I settled on a mk2 Jetta because I could find one my budget would allow.
This is what I settled for: A 1992 Mk2 Jetta CLX, 1.8 carb... It wasn't in great shape but the body was fairly straight and it didn't look like it needed tons of work.
This is how I got Clover. She had been standing for over a year. Neglected pretty badly.

Not the best start but it looked a lot better after a thorough clean.
First thing I needed to do was wheel alignment. Car was twitching like crazy. Found out that the steering rack was on its way out.

I don't really like big (jumbo) bumpers. I can appreciate it now. (after many hours of looking at mk2's online). I needed to find narrow bumpers which didn't go too well. I happen to find a set from 2 different cars. Not in the best shape but they will do for now.

At this point I was pretty amped on my progress. lol. But then disaster struck hard! The fuel pipe that runs to the carb wasn't clamped down correctly. (my fault) On my way home from an event in town... boom. Well not boom but I saw fire and smoke. And I had only had the car for 5 days by then...

I got out the car, grabbed my camera & wanted to run because I watch movies & cars tend to explode once they catch a light. lol. Luckily some guys ahead of me pulled over to help or else I would have watched her burn up completely. We couldn't get the bonnet open because the bonnet catch was the first thing to melt... obviously. If it had opened, life would have been great.

The fire brigade came very quickly & ripped the front end apart. It was painful seeing it happen but they stopped the fire.

A tow truck took me home. I wish I had someone one tow me with a rope because now I have to live with a bent stone tray. Its super annoying. But that was the least of my problems.

The next day... This is what I was left with. I was pretty much angry at the universe.

Burnt to a crisp. #sigh

I took the front end off and tried cleaning things up a bit.

A few days later the car was sent off for a respray. I won't bore you with tons of pictures of this. It took about 2 months for the guy to "finish" the car. He didn't do the best job.

Crazy hidden rust. I was shocked to see this. Apparently the newer mk2 models had a solid layer of rust protection.

Decided to keep the car cream. I didn't want to deal with drama of full colour change. Just wanted to get her back on the road again.

I decided that I wanted to go with a Golf front to change things up a bit. My good friend had a mk2 jetta as well. Another reason why I didn't really want a jetta. Got this double light grill and original Hella lights for dirt cheap so that helped. #score
This was my friends jetta on steels. Its no longer with us, someone crashed into him

I got Clover back home and got a mechanic to help me get her running again. I needed to replace basically everything but surprisingly the motor still runs! I needed to have my steering rack, cv's, etc replaced while I was at it. Sucked badly but it needed to be done.

That horribly bent stone tray just kills me.

Even tho the spray job wasn't the most amazing, the car didn't look too bad. I finally had my blank canvas & could start doing things.

I got some roof racks, thin slat Golf grill and a RSA AA badge. Removed the black number plate panel in the rear. It now takes me about 5min to try to lock/unlock the boot. lol. Looks a lot cleaner so it's worth it.

Some interior shots. This was a really bad place to be. Each seat was different and they were filthy.

#Ive since replaced all the seats to one set & cleaned them up.
I had to do something about my 4x4 stance. It took me ages to do it because I needed to get the car roadworthy (MOT). Cash was low so I went with the old "faithful" route & hacked things. haha. Got some dropped springs that I cut some more.

I didn't go too extreme with it. Didn't want to bounce all over the road. The ride wasn't as bad as I expected it to be to be honest. Decent temp setup.
The "cool" 14" TSW wheels served me well but it was time for some change. I got some 14" steel wheels and went into winter mode with them.

They looked like poo so I sprayed them black.

Before.

After.
Went to town for a mass cycle and snapped some pictures of her.

I went with all red tails. Removed the racks too.
Ive got a bit of a Mercedes obsession... Decided that Clover will be rolling on Benz wheels until I can get some legit wheels. Started off small and sourced some hub caps and had them colour matched while the the car was being done. The caps have curb rash and some rust. I might try & find a good set but i'll probably be on Benz alloys before then. (hopefully)

Was out at a meeting, had my camera & got some pictures.

This is how she currently stands. It's been quite the adventure but I do love Clover. We've been through some things.
Coil-overs and chassis notch will be coming soon. I need to find someone to make up a sump guard too for a bit of piece of mind. Over all I plan to neaten her up a whole lot more. This list of to do's is endless but it feels good ticking them off slowly but surely...
Thanks for watching.
