Ridin' on coils
Today was much more productive than the last 2 days.. This morning I finished up the driver's side and started/finished the passenger's side by tonight. I was much better at taking pictures today because I had already gone through it once.
Started off by getting the tie rod separated from the knuckle. 30 years of crust had pretty much frozen it on there. I got the tool from autozone and smacked it with a big hammer and that got it off

Next was cutting the tabs off the strut tube that hold the hard lines

Undid the hard lines and got the caliper off

I unbolted the top strut mount, and took out the whole assembly and was left with this:

Then I had to transfer everything from the old strut to the new one
















After all of that I finally set the car on the ground after three days on stands. I put the coils at the highest setting for a few reasons, I didn't want to put them too low and not be able to get the jack out, I want to be able to get out of my driveway- I'll park in visitor parking and crank down the adjusters there, and I also waned to be able to jack it up easier if there were any problems.
Basically, sorry for all the excuses but next update will actually be of the crossmember on the ground. Oh, also since I had to disconnect the hardlines the car has no brakes right now either, I have to bleed them, another reason I wanted to keep the car at an accessible height.
Here it is at the highest setting:

I have 8" of adjustment and at most 3.5" inches of wheel gap so getting low will be a piece of cake.
I've been working on the car 10 hours a day the last 3 days so I'm saving bleeding the brakes till tomorrow, here's where I left off tonight:

Adrian, I am so jealous of this thing dude! I didn't get anything done to my car over break.... can't wait to see the finished product with coilovers fully installed. I had to sell a couple parts to offset all my separation purchases haha

An update of mediocre caliber
Ok folks, back for 10 days on spring break. Thats not a lot of time so let's get right into it..
1) My withdrawals from Olga usually result in me buying things, these last 2 months were no different:
RSI Coilovers, 8" 350# springs with short Bilstein HD's


Holset Hy35. 9cm^2 turbine housing, compressor housing same as HX35



Ford EDIS components for when I convert from K-jet to Megasquirt




The installation of the coils has been riddled with face palms, 4 letter words, and just general fail, however 1 side is pretty much done.
You can see in the pictures that RSI sends the entire strut assembly which includes a knuckle/spindle. This means putting them on isn't as easy as unbolting 2 bolts on the knuckle for the coils to come off like the s13 guys can do.
The process is much more involved, I basically had to transfer the entire hub/brake system onto the new spindle and then bolt that back into the car.
I started off taking pictures but they got more scarce as I got more frustrated.

got everything transferred to the new struts and bolted into the car. Tie rod end is being insubordinate as are the hard lines that screw into the caliper.. but its in there at least

I think a relevant question would be how many coils did I NOT cut off my car hahaha at least I'm going legit now
thats it for now. Next update will be soon... all I can say is I feel bad for my crossmember

I'm acquiring parts right now for megasquirt, efi, and holset HY35 upgrade, along with the b21F intake which is supposed to be the best flowing stock intake.
word that will be awesome, i havnt heard about the b21F intake, but if thats true ill use the one from my GT!

word, yeah i was talking about the black housings. i just started a project with an 80 242 GT, putting a '90 740 Turbo engine in. So i have the single rounds also, just looking for something besides the sealed beams

haha yeah as am I. Some times I feel so in over my head. The front setup I got used, which is the early single round setup off a '75 240.
The actual black housings I got off eBay because the sealed beam lights didn't work. Those were equally as dim and I wouldn't recommend them- thats why I had to switch back to the dual rectangle front end.

Learning to TIG
Hey guys, so at my school there is a formula SAE team which builds a go kart-like race car and competes against other schools.
here's last years car:

A friend of mine got a grant to build an electric version of this car to replace the gas one. We are building it from scratch and using CAD software to develop the parts to be fabricated.
My task in the project is once we are past the design stage will be to weld everything.
I've never welded before so I've spent 7 hours in the shop over the past 2 days trying to get better.
these are the scrap tabs and metal i've been practicing on:

I started just trying to lay down a good bead on some scrap steel


The next day I tried actually fusing 2 pieces together which proved much harder. I just got little beads of filler and wasn't getting penetration


It started to come along though







Not much of an update but I think this has made me lean more towards making flares out of sheet metal rather than fiberglass
