  • 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl street rod (Very many boring pictures)

I traded my 1993 Ford Exploder
for this clapped out 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl with a 390 under the hood.

It was a true project. The rear quarter panels both rusted out, the 390 was tired and old, the interior was gone. However, the floor pans were strong, the rest of the body was straight, and it did come stock with a high compression 390 from a thunderbird. I drove it for a month or so, and decided I'd rebuild it for my senior project.

My plan is rebuilt and improved 390, body fixed of rust, and a clear coat over the patina. Then, 3 inch lower and a race interior.

My stage one is the 390. I started pulling the engine apart on 7/23/13. First, I removed the air filter.

Then, I removed the hood. This was difficult, the only person to help me was my sister, who is not strong/willing to get dirty.

Next, I drained all the fluids and removed the radiator, fan, hoses, etc.

I removed the wires, the radiator overflow, some hoses, and the valve covers.

This was disgusting. So much sludge built up, the cork gasket was a bitch. This is gonna be so much better after I rebuild it.

    So far, that's it.

This is my favorite year Galaxie and a bucket list car for me. I had a '66 Fairlane Subbed to see where this goes!

                7/27/13

Today, I was able to pull the engine. I started by removing all the bolts holding the engine to the bellhousing. I removed the motor mounts with the help of an impact wrench. I cut off the exhaust right below the manifold. I removed the carb to make way for a chain, removed the power steering pump, and chained up. The motor came out with little to no fighting, other than the torque converter was still bolted to the flexplate.

The difficulties today were the gunked up bolts and the lack of help all day. This is my first time pulling an engine, and I did it with little to no help and didnt fuck anything up. I can say it was a good day.

Engine plans are new intake manifold, .030 bored over, flat top pistons, a new cam, headers and exhaust

Today, the engine was disassembled almost all the way. Got it down to everything other than the crank, timing chain, pistons, rods, and cam. Gonna do those tomorrow when I get a pulley puller. Lots of hard work today, I thank god for air tools.
