  • Quest #2: the Scandinavian theme continues...

Okay so with my 21st birthday lurking around the corner (UK age for classic car insurance) I decided to purchase a new project car.

Here's a little teaser for now:

Hopefully most will know what this is; it's 1981, 73k miles and hasn't seen the road since 1989. I bought it for a fair price of £800, this will be my build thread so I'll try make it as interesting as possible...

Oh and I pick it up next weekend!

More pictures to come, sorry about the poor phone quality one I'll do a full shoot when I get my hands on it next week.

      It's a 1981 Saab 99 Turbo

Nice! I figured it might be a Saab but I've never seen one quite like that. What are your plans for it other then getting it ready to hit the road

Well once it's on the road:
          • I might respray it, keeping it black
          • New wheels, staying retro but probably with some dish
          • Needs lowered. Would be cool to put the hydraulics from my Volvo into it but that's something to think about 6 months or so from now.. Don't really fancy cutting the struts up because I doubt I'll get my hands on another set.
          • Definitely clean the engine up, won't rebuild it if I don't have to but I'll tune it up a bit
          • Interior is flawless so it will stay original

That could be it, I'm sure that list will change about 100 times by the time it's ready for the road but we'll see.

Just so excited to pick it up and get started.

          One more shot for now:

I am inner than in for this! I think a static drop (doesn't really need to be slammed) and some dish would make this Uh-Mazing

Delivered today, and so it begins...

Challenge #1: get it running again... was running when I went to see it :/ I think there's a fuel pump issue.

So got to work trying to get the Saab started last night. Had a suspicion that the fuel pump wasn't working so I took it off and tested it, turns out it's ceased.

New one now on order, lets hope it's going to be as easy as that!

                    Bosch pump that came off:

So on Wednesday I got to work on the Saab to try and get it to run. First of we removed the bonnet and made a make shift fuel tank with some fresh petrol and tried to start the car but with no luck. Next we followed the fuel lines and tested everywhere to make sure the petrol was pumping correctly, and it was.

Next we charged the battery up a bit then poured petrol directly into the manifolds and it finally started but cut out after around 15 seconds because the battery died. So we got my brothers Citroen and hooked the jump leads up to the battery which finally got the Saab to start and run well. Took the car up to temperature to make sure the fan kicked in and everything looked okay, which it did.

Only problem now is we've blown an oil seal somewhere and the car is leaking oil when it runs. The engine is going to come out now to be rebuilt just as soon as I locate the oil leak.

While the rebuild is taking place I'm trying to source some body parts because a lot of the car is rotting, the passenger side door and rear quarter panel/arch have been covered in filler.
