  • my fluffy 86' 535i build

OK, maybe its not fluffy but its was dirty when a rope was looped through the tow hoop and pulled to its salvation a mere several houses up.

it is a 1 family owned, two owner car that has 87k miles and at time of last title transfer in 2001 had 56k. alpine white on cardinal red with 5 speed mated to a m30b34 and lsd diff. the car has never left columbus GA till now. this is my journey to get car back on road, to savannah and looking lookin like it should with up sized wheels, lipo to certain front and rear parts, and a general rebuild of everything. white fluff, as i deemed her had all her orginal keys and also all the original window stickers and invoice etc from when car was bought back in 86'

look, you can see where its sat on google imagines.

i pulled it to my house because i did not want to start the car in its current sitting condition plus it was missing a battery. so a look over and refreshing was a must. but before i did even that, i need to see what the car even looked like under the earthly growth that had begun. its a real shame that a tree branch had fallen on the hood, cause the car is as straight as a arrow and no rust.

when i was in savannah, and by neighbor called me about the car, i thought the car was bronzeit in memory and this is why

    and the scrubbing commences

so looking around for wheels i uncovered these in altanta. having my tires on my m3 beyond cambered out and maybe having 40 semi-safe miles, i enlisted my buddie who was coming to visit for weekend bring them. i still at this point hadn't even been home to pick up the car, and i knew that if i was gonna get it back to savannah, i at least need tires. so i arranged for my dad to meet me at the exit 27 when my friend went back home to Atalanta via interstate 16 with rims of course.

    FISTABULE FENDER GAP!

    tune up sequence engaged!
a new battery was a must cause it was missing its original. great....139$ and i cant return a core. put it in and turn key to first click. MORE POWER SCOTTY! jk. all lights came on and its a go.

so i took my student loan broke ass to the local store and spent some more of my non- existent post-college money on full tune up parts. checking the old oil, it was beautifully clean and perfect level, but i know oil can lose its properties with age and deteriorate so i got new oil, all filters, belts, new coolant, valve cover gasket, tstat and a couple other parts. I set to the task of draining the tank because the cluster said was more than half full. Awesome, 12 gallons later into several different buckets, and me smelling like i took a bath in a parts cleaner, tank was cleaned out and buckets of gas put in the side of the house and forgot about.

with all the new parts on and fresh gas placed into tank, it was moment of truth. time to turn key to that fabled position 2. with a lighting quick turn of the wrist, the car sputtered into new existence. barly able to idle without constant gas light gas, it obviously had vacuum problems. but slowly after the what seemed the entire night, the car smoothed out with its rocker arms operating so smooth you wouldn't think it has one of those clanking 80's bmw engine in the bay.

the next day, i went and bought several feet of new vacuum hoses and set off replacing the old cracked and mushy rubber lines. with a couple of quick drives around the street block and with no plates (i dont live in a closed neighborhood) i deemed it worthy of the torture of 2+ hours of the dmv line for the new legendary ugly Georgia licenses plate.

with a new plate and some insurance, i departed on my 250 mile journey in a car that truly was untested after its 5 years of sleep with a truck full; of fluids and tools just incase. and boy did it surprise me and my extremely worried parents and neighbor. going 70+ on worn bushings, i was able to make it safely home with no incident

i will try to spread the goodness that is the e28 as you have done. hah

so i made it home to savannah and from my trip, learned many things.

-the suspension in the rear is 100% collapsed so the car made some contact to say the least into the 245/45 tires on way home
-the rear driver side caliper is not working to well, and the other one is barley in better shape
        -electrical electrical electrical

        and the babies together

So knowing me, i decided to take another trip in the car. 220 mile round trip from Savannah GA to Charleston SC to vist my brother who was there covering a tennis event for tennis magazine. well car drove fine to there. after the brief weekend, when i came time to come back, the dam clutch pedal goes to the floor. slave cylinder barley working. it worked barley enough only to shift up with a help from rev matching. no downshifting or going to netural. pretty stressfull since i went down the main parkway, hitting every light. stalled out twice, and whats funny was the cars behind me at the times were a Bentley coupe and a audi r8 vert. showing the strength of bmw to them!

so i put in all new fuses, as the old were still the original bmw ones and they literally fell apart while removing them. a quick test of everything showed that fix an insane amount of problems.

a month passes of extreme brokeness-angina which was remedy by a freelance job for davis furniture. back in the game with order of new parts.

removed the rear driver side brakes. the brake line were cracked so some ss lines will go in place

having a problem with how the rear arm drops cause the blown suspension. need that suspension

i think the rotor is shot

and here is the problem caliper, look at that muck

after some taping off and media blasting i was left with this

more taping off, some caliper paint, polish of the pistons and rebuild new rebuild kit. things looking new

so a new wheel came in for it

and on the car it went. leather has a couple of marks, but overwise its in good shape

so the cluster was acting up so i knew i needed most likly a new si board. when i pulled mine out i was shocked to find the damaged that the batteries had done over the years. a new baord was needed and not just batteries. so i bought for 185$, a new program-logic batter-less board
