  • Ratty Mk1 Golf

    Hey everyone

First off, Here's some of the 13 cars I've had over the last couple of years, some cool, most lame

    KB Laser

    Fully sik uleh VR Commodore

My KE20 Corolla that I loved to death that kickstarted my good friend Jeff's Corolla addiction

    Another Commodore, VH this time

    Shitty Charade

So you can see the kind of quality (or lack of) cars that I usually own.

    So.

A while back I bought my diesel Mk1 for the lowly sum of $850 with rego.

After I got it home I looked in the glovebox and discovered it was full of receipts from the lady who owned it in Hawthorne VIC (I live in SA) during the '90's, as well as the original service records (the same lady) and original instruction manual.

The fuse box is also incredibly tidy and not tampered with, which is a huge sigh of relief as I've skulked forums before and read in the nightmares people have with them.

Anyway it drove great, save for the boaty stuffed shocks it and the little puddle of diesel I awoke to under the back of it one morning :/

    Anyway.

As far as I can see it was delivered to Sanderson Motor Co Hawthorne on 1/5/79 for the price of $9,298.00 with $235.00 stamp duty to a Mrs Lavina McArdle of Church St Richmond and at some point in the 90's the car found a new home in SA as that's when the receipts stop.

Here's some pics of when I first got it

I'd had the car a couple of weeks when I got sick of the disgusting rusty wheels. In comes old friend and S|W member JeffTree and some rattle cans

As you can see in this pic my car was horribly stock in height (was)

Photos of mine and Jeff's dailys

I'd decided to buy a sticker to describe the car when done

    Because shortly after, this happened

I'd also found a nana rug for ultimate grandma spec

By this time I'd found some cheap wheels, $150 for Cheviot meshies, 13x5.5JJ +32

6 days after payment my coilovers had arrived! Only got the fronts in that day

My wheels arrived and I drove over to Jeff's house to dry fit... the hub didn't fit and the bolts were too short so the pics are dodgy as. Not aggressive at all but spacers will fix that

Gave the wheels a clean and they came up alright, plans are to have them black with a polished face and lip

Also got a foxtail for my antenna

Living in a rural town and driving dirt roads has it's consequences

Finally fitted the rear coilovers, and as soon as I'd lowered the jack I knew something was wrong. This was as low as they'd go, the strut is fully compressed

Took the springs out of the coilovers and put them with the stock struts

    I think it worked well!

Went out and took photos with my phone and did some basic editing (using the Facebook app for iPhone of all things)

Since taking the photos I've painted the bonnet a medium grey, painted my grille and badge a flat black and have acquired a S|W banner from Seb, a bloke I met through Jeff. No idea on his username but I know he had a Beetle named Zelda.

Attended a local S|W meet yesterday and loved it, waiting for pics of my beast to emerge

My build is strictly on a budget (apart from suspension which didn't fit) and I plan to keep it that way. Only brand name stuff I'll use is if I can pick it up cheap, so don't expect brand name wheels etc any time soon. Static for life because bags are for shopping and I because can't afford them

Thanks for reading, will update as I progress

I like this ...kinda, but i think it definitely needs more low to be worthy of that windshield sticker.

Looks promising. I'm not a fan of the grey hood, but I love the remaining patina.
