  • Round 2 of Redline Time Attack at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway was 3 weeks ago and I was little nervous because the car was murderous at Round 1 without the wing (determined to be illegal at the time and fixed for round 2) and with the suspension settings way off due to it being the first time I'd run the car on that set up. Between rounds 1 and 2 I changed to wing stands to make it legal, and made some adjustments to the suspension to get it back on all KW springs and how I wanted it. With all of the changes I made I was eager to see what the car would do. The last time I was at Chuckwalla for competition was my first Redline Time Attack race and I had just put on the TC Klines and was running no aero. At that event I did a 2:08 and walked away with a third place finish. It's been about a year since then and now the car has been improved in every single way. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of lap time the car was going to put down in its new form.

Saturday was practice and I had the goal of setting a lap time near the limit and to give the tires a proper first heat cycle. I went out in the first session warmed up the tires, did three laps, and hit my target practice lap time of a 2:00. With aero, more power, and the set up dialed I shaved 8 seconds off of my previous Time Attack PB. I was thrilled with the results and was looking forward to the Time Attack sessions the next day.

Sunday came and my qualifying laps went well putting me as the fastest RWD car on street tires at the event with a 2:00.1. The Time Attack session was early in the morning giving me a great opportunity to try and dip into sub 2 minutes. My flying lap was looking great and in the ball park to hit my target of a low :59. Disaster struck at one of the most crucial corners where I was trying to brake a little too late. The lap before and after that ruined sector were faster than my previous pb and would have been in line with my goal of a 1:59. Unfortunately my mistake cost me dearly and I was unable to get a clean lap after that first hot lap. I had to settle for a 2:00.7 which was a new class record, besting the existing record by over 4 seconds. That lap was also good for the fastest RWD car at the event and the fastest Naturally Aspirated car at the event despite having a full interior and being a street driven car. The results were great despite the disappointment of not hitting my goal.

Here is in car video of my lap.

I owe a huge thanks to StanceWorks, Avus Autosport, KW Suspension, VAC Motorsports, Motorsport Hardware, Koyorad, PurÖl, and Dream Room for all of their support.

    • Summer is coming, and CA track days get hot! I recently picked up a Koyorad radiator since the aluminum radiator that was in there was one that I bought in a rush. With the old radiator the car would overheat on hot track days after 3-4 laps. When I found out Koyorad was coming out with a radiator I knew it would be the option I was looking for. Excellent quality, fitment, and value.

Here are a couple of shots of the radiator. As you can see, it has a much bigger core than stock at 48mm. Most >42mm radiators from reputable manufacturers are almost twice the price. So this was a no brainer since i know that Koyorad has top notch quality and all of my friends have used their parts on track for years.

In no time I had the old radiator out. Here are a couple of shots comparing the old radiator to the new one.

One thing I really didn't like about the old radiator was the poor fitment. When we put it in originally it didn't fit right and required a lot of massaging to make fit. The Koyorad radiator fit perfectly and the factory shroud mounted easily. Needless to say I was very happy with the ease of installation.

Next came testing on track and in gridlock traffic. With the old radiator or stock radiator I couldn't sit in traffic with the A/C on. With the new radiator that problem went away. I'm confident that i could sit for hours and never have a problem. Finally the real test of beating on it at the track came. I ran the car for 3 sessions with multiple hotlaps for testing the temps never budged despite the hot day.

Last Sunday I made it out to the BMWCCA LA Chapter Auto-x. I finally had an open weekend to help them with some instruction and kill some cones (no cones were harmed during this test). I've found Auto-X'ing to be hard on cooling systems since you're near redline for over a minute at low speeds, and then the car sits and heat soaks. With the old radiator temps would start to rise after the first run (no fans). With the Koyorad installed the temperatures never budged.

Overall I'm thrilled with the performance of the radiator. Hands down the best option when it comes to performance, quality, and value.

      • Since the last post I had Round 4 of Redline Time Attack at Willow Springs International Raceway. It was a really hot day, and a mistake in my first timed session lead to a fast lap that wasn't as good as I had hoped. I held the previous record with a 1:32.243. I was able to set a new record of 1:31.914. It was a bit of a disappointment since the car would have done a lower 1:31 and potentially a 1:30 in the first session. The temperatures got to around 95 degrees in the second timed session which kill any chance of a really fast lap. Despite that, I still had a lot of fun and the cars performance was excellent.

Here are a couple of photos from the event.

Round 5 is next weekend, and my SLR control arms came in yesterday! I'm excited to get these on and see how the car changes.

My front Big Brake Kit from WP Pro is coming together too.
Here's a picture of the 8 Piston Calipers with Carbide Nitride treated heat shields

They're also working on a light weight rotor. With the rotor and hat it should weigh in at less than that stock rotor despite being almost 40mm larger.

        • I installed the arms a couple of days ago in preparation for Round 5 of Redline Time Attack. The response and feel on the drive home was great. I can't wait to see how different the front end feels this weekend!

Seriously! Everyone is shocked at how comfortable the seats are. The guys at bf.c have been pretty friendly towards it. I consider it a middleground car between the two camps lol

Haha I was to. Unfortunately they were a little to wide for my liking, however, definitely the most comfortable aftermarket seats i've sat in. Also surprising they dont flam away on bf. It seems to have tamed out the past few years. Either that or all the geizers are finally kickin' the bucket . Love your car dude.

                          • Next weekend is my last race in the Enthusiast Class. In preparation we've started building another engine.

Yesterday I started disassembly. All that's left is to pull everything out of the bottom end and then it's off to the machine shop.

I was a little surprised too. I thought they'd shun me for chrome stickers, polished wheels, and my love of stance haha. I guess they must not have noticed.
