  • Two Tone Aero S13 and the journey to OG

    Hi my names Jonathon,
    Im from Victoria, Australia

    Story:
I bought my s13 back in March 2011 as a car I could learn in. The reason behind buying an S13 was because I really loved the way it looked, at the time I didn't even know they were called S13's I thought they were called 240sx's.. soon learnt about the name changes depening on regions.. I kind of dived into buying one without reading up on the engine, the history or trends of the car, I just felt like it was "the one" i should buy, after all it was the first and only car I looked at..
So here she is, the day I took her home.

A shot of the interior. It had and still has an uncracked dash, genuine floor mats, 185,000km's and factory speakers. The engine and transmission are CA18DE and Automagic.

She was clean, for an S13 I had been told by other S13 drivers and that I got a perfect canvas. I started reading and delving through forums and threads about S13's. Finding out my colour scheme is one of the more sought after ones and that having an uncracked dash was a blessing lol :P. I went and got the car roadworthied as well and while reading, it stated the colour of my car was green.... I saw only silver and then my friends began commenting on how they loved the minty green colour, I was getting confused as I only saw my car as silver... I then later found out I'm colourblind and can't actually see my own "rare" colour.... sad day for me

It wasn't until Late 2011 and early 2012 that things began to change on the car. During the peroid of March 2011-April 2012 all the changes made were a custom 2 1/4" exhuast with a stock looking twin tip, buying a speedzone roof wing, sourcing aero skirts, which I pressure packed myself and removing the spoiler.

Then June (my birthday had just passed) was when things started happening. I bought myself my first set of wheels, which were White Rota Grids in 17 x 9 +12. I loved them to bits, I researched into offset and width and go set-ups for s13 and found that +12 was a good way to.. but I didn’t have coilovers so I was driving a monster truck around for a while . I didn’t get many photo’s before a major game changer mod which has been one of my most favorite, finding an aero bar and chucking that on. While wearing the rota grids I stretched tyres… but one pair didn’t end up too good. I also bought something I had wanted for a while, clear taillights.

I had been looking for one for about 12 months before actually finding a legit one. It came with clear indicators and I bought clear lenses to go with it. I spent 4 days prepping, primering, painting and clear coating (all pressure back –canned- btw) My car was almost completed.. so I thought….

I then wanted to enter Grip Shift Slides show and shine, but before I did, I had to find coilovers.. I ended up borrowing some from a mate and they really made the car. I loved it, it was two tone, aero, lowered and siting nice with white wheels.

After much thought on well, i guess growing up, I decided that I needed to go down a different path.. basically the right path and be genuine.. so i need to do something new, something that hasn’t been done before. I was just browsing the web aimlessly when I found an image of an old S13 with some old school wheels. I than began searching for more “old school” S13’s. I found heaps of awesome examples, two of which came from JDMST forums. I began to notice something though, old school s13’s were hardly ever aero and what was even more striking was, there was pretty much only one other two tone rocking and old school look, but was white over gold and not my color. It was pretty much then when I decided I would create my own unique car, something that not many people have seen… a two tone seafoam green aero old school s13.

I then went in search of some SSR Formula’s after finding only a pair of formulas and another pair of SSR Hart Mesh, I sold off my Grids to a mate and bought the two different pairs. I then wrapped the fronts in tyres and threw them on… I loved it (I also bought my own coilovers as well just before hand. HSD HR coilovers)

I'll leave it at that for now.. there has been heaps more progression since the last images, but ill leave that for tomorrow..

Haha yeh, 15's suit old school a little better, but when i was looking I couldnt find any 16's at the time.. Ive found some now but Im happy with the 15's.

Mk1's look awesome a mate of mine had them on his s13 two tone, but it gives out a different look, pretty much a "drift pig" vibe, I just wanna try and keep mine refined and clean.

So continuing from last night, Ive got more to add to this, as Ill be migrating my JDMST build thread accross to here.

            *************************************** 18/01/13 **********************************************

Well here are a few more pictures that'll I leave here, also my pods are finshed clear coating and going to pick them up tonight.

Also for Christmas my girlfriend of 6 years.. nawww... got me something so epicly awesome. She managed to find me a Digital Cluster which came from pretty much same car as me, Ca18DE 1989 q series auto without hicas and abs etc.. it came witht he HUD as well but i dont want to cut into my dash just yet.

Ill also be buying a new pair of SSR Star formula's to match the the other pair

            *************************************** 24/01/13 **********************************************

Also had lots of requests to change to OEM corner indicators.... . swapped my brother my clears for his oems.

Also my SSR's had arrived, the specs on them are 15 x 7.5 +10

(my brothers champagne two tone tucked away on the right)

            *************************************** 26/01/13 **********************************************

And well today, i i had time to tyre up the rears and chuck them on... as i wrote this I was late for work as well.... :/

            *************************************** 29/01/13 **********************************************
I then went out with a couple of mates after work scouting for locations to shoot other cars for my blog www.zeroclearance.net

            Under The Bolte Classic:

Taken on the rooftop of a carpark at 3am (yes 3 AM, 100 ISO, 3.5f and at 15 seconds of exposure)

I also had a fair interesting event happen to me that night as well..

At about 3am we were leaving the carpark of where the Flagstaff JDMST was held, I was following friends home but got stuck at lights.. when they turned green I turned around the corner and 2x Australian Federal Police cars where there, one with lights on and a pulled over car and another just driving in the lanes. Thinking it was my friends and not wanting to get done I turned down a side street and lost them.. and got myself lost... I somehow ended up on the other side of docklands. I was in a turning lane when a VE shot up behind me, looked into the rear vision mirror... and to NO suprise was a Highway Patrol Car. They instantly pulled me over. Did they usual licence check, breatho test and look the car over. One went back to the car while the other came around to the window and started talking to me. Asked where I was from and what I was doing, told him about taking photo's and he ended up wanting to see them, showed him, talked about camera's, he let me know he had an SR20 S13 as well when he was younger and then told me how my car looked really nice and proceeded to tell me to have a nice night and left..... I was so shocked I didn't end up leaving the spot till about 3:40..

Anyways if your still reading, with the annoucement of The-Lowdowns "Showcased" reoccuring this year, we at ZeroClearance will be making the hike once again, but this time with our crew. Well, just more of a picture update. Ive still got my pods waiting to be put on, just need some sikaflex and she'll be set. I may be putting a deposit on a legit B-Wave wing as well... Well here's some pics

            *************************************** 07/02/13 **********************************************

Well back again. Ive finally got my aero pods on.. thank you Sikaflex
I've also been rocking my brothers GTR grill, atm im not set on it, I may have to paint in my colour to get a final verdict but im still loving my big letter OEM one.

I should also be heading up to the rural areas of our state this weekend to hopefully buy a b-wave spoiler ...

well, here you guys/girls go... some pics

            Aero Pods..

I was thinking thinking about spoilers.... I came accross a genuine B-Wave and thought that would go prettty well with the old school styling...

A nice hour and bit trip up into country VIC and I even snapped some pics of our cars

Well, just need to prep it tomorrow and then paint it. Going to give it a shot myself again, hopefully it turns out like my other aero parts ive painted...
I'm also pretty much done with the exterior now... wow... she's come a long way

            *************************************** 19/02/13 **********************************************

Just a quick update, tonight Ill be finishing off the B wave wing, hopefully to have it ready by Wednesday Night in time for my film shoot of my car

Also here's a shot just for a giggle.

            *************************************** 22/02/13 **********************************************

Since my last update, I managed to paint the B Wave wing.. but not to good standards, for some reason everything wasnt working as well as it used to, the primer didn't fill, the paint would run, it was also colour banding, the clear coat didnt shine.. yeh everything wasnt agreeing with me, the only thing I couldn't find to "blame" it on, was the fact that its not plastic..

Anyways after two attempts i just left it how it is, eventually Ill get it done properly

Also the other night I went out with a couple of mates, as we are filming another friend and I's car. It got a bit hairy in the city with police out and about but we manged to find a quiet spot and just film some nice slow rolling shots. We then concluded with Yarra BLVD.

            *************************************** 15/03/13 **********************************************

... SO I designed and got a sticker printed....
Basically this stickers has a few meanings and yes.. my car is an 88 model.. lol but it doesnt refer to the build date

            - I was born in the early 1990's
            - I really love 90's styling of Japanese imports and thats the theme of this s13
            - It was a song and lyrics from a song I liked in Initial D which has the same colour s13 as mine...
there's a couple more but they're the main ones

            *************************************** 05/04/13 **********************************************

Basically the other night, I got a message from a stranger on facebook, he messaged me a link to a gumtree ad in which was titles S13 Aero Side Skirts and Rear Pods.. I immediately started texting the number, I was informed she still had it, but It was a race to get to it as 2 other buyers were also contacting her... I had work in half an hour (5:30pm) and so I thought I would loose it... turns out I was able to finish earlier and set off to go check them out. They were real nice, (the people) as it was dark, I couldnt tell if they were different, so they helped me take off my existing side skirts, and we compared them. The difference between S13 Aero and 180sx Aero are the corners on the bottom, the S13's are more round and also make the whole bottom part look thinner. The extra cool things about these side skirts were, they were genuine and had ALL the mounting tabs (tightens to the seam, screws for front and rear wheel wells and inside underneath the door trim) AND the were already in my bottom colour. I also got to nab genuine pods from them as well which were in as good condition so Ill give them a lick of paint myself soon.

Also a few weeks back I found something on the net I had to get. ... and it finally arrived today

This 32 page beauty, contains for me a whole world of knowledge. It's an 88 Brochure for S13 Silvia's detailing all optional extra's all the trims, the model packages and colour options. I found out that S13's had the option of a factory installed Subwoofer with controller in the hole between the boot and the back of the rear seats.. pretty neato.

Other things going on in my life surrounding cars and my Sil.. Well my spoiler will finally be ready this weekend so I can throw that back on with it being nicely painted, I'm also looking into getting a front lip for the aero bar, as it's hardly been done, as people have seen poor examples and just dubbed it as being "crap", so Ill give that a gander.. I'm also getting the Sil detailed in the coming weeks in prep for 100MM

            *************************************** 10/04/13 **********************************************

So back again with a new update , pretty good one for only one reason... the B-wave!

Lets begin, so this weekend Ive got a Silvia Owners group meet, I always like to keep my car clean for meets, so this morning after droping off the girlfriend at the station at 7:30am  I came back home and got started on cleaning, I had parked at her house the other night and the tree decided to shed skin onto the silvia and the ferns didn't come off from being rinsed, they were baked in there, so i had to get in and scrub..

            Before

            After

I gave the interior a quick clean as well.. really love the standard S13 interior's..

And so apparently this has happened... Not sure if it's a win because of low... or a lose because it cost $40....

and here's the best part... the B-wave. Finally got it back after almost a month, the guy i gave it to takes great pride in his work so, he went over it and over it until he was happy with it. I love it, it really brings the rear of the car to life and gives out the 90's vibe.

As you can see the pods are off (and theres a bunch of sikaflex there) as I sold my fibreglass ones and the genuine pods need to be re-painted... Ill just can those myself for now and have them on by the end of the week.

AND NOW THAT BRINGS US ALL UP TO DATE.... looking forward to continuing my S13's journey with you guys

Its getting there, nice work. Somehow something with the wheel/tyre combo doesn't quite work for me. I think perhaps slightly more aggressive wheels maybe in bigger widths would allow for those big tyres but with a bit of stretch rather than them bowing outwards and making the wheels appear narrower. I've been looking on Yahoo Japan a bit lately and there are so many pairs of cool 4x114.3 wheels that go through there at fair prices (i **** this since my cars are both 4x100!)

I also think clear taillights don't suit the retro look, if i were you i'd just get a mint set of originals if your aren't, polish them up and go from there.

I like the aero rain guards, they're certainly the right look to suit, but they look to be carbon fibre? i'd definately look to get rid of those and go for more OEM style 'brown tint' type ones.

in regard to a front lip on the aero bar, i definately agree your car would benefit, but also it is hard to work off an aero bumper. Perhaps try to get your hands on an OEM bar and try to retrofit a lip like a splitter style 90s one.

for interior touches, you could get some old square retro speakers and put them on the back shelf for the look haha

keep it going though, certainly a cool project!

Yeh, really wanted to go that wing, but over the weekend I got to see one first hand, and I can say it really would have match the sil at all, it would need the wider guards and bigger wheels.

Yeh totally agree it could do with some wider wheels, I actually found a pair of 15x 8 +14's which would sit really well on the rears. They also had a stepped lip, but i let them go, for now I need to just save up a little coin. When refencing images from 90's japan they werent really into stretch and it was more so about big fat rubber, but they also had wide wheels as well.. I could run 165's lol and get stretch but umm don't know about that being too safe. SO in the future Ill get a wider set for the rear, upgrade coilovers to PBM tog o lower and get some lower profile tires possibly for some stretch to put a modern twist on an old school style.

I also have a pair of stock lights, but honestly I cant bear to swtich them back, they look horrible and bland, the only thing i really don't want to do haha, and i know it doesn't match old school just the stock ones look so dull.. may toy with the idea later tonight.

Yhe the weather shields are carbon fiber (origin) as my original ones snapped. Genuine ones are a clear plastic though and quite hard to find in good condition.

The front lip im still in search of one that would look good and level out the b-wave wing. not a bad idea testing out some on a stock bar. I have heard DC2 mugen and tyre R?? lips can fit.
Cheers heaps for the constructive comments, much appreciated!
