From an interview for my school's paper.
"My main point in this build was that you don't need to have a crazy budget to build a well sorted car. You just need to spend your money wisely, and you need to know what you're doing. And if you don't have the funds or time for what you want/need to do, then don't rush.
It just bothers me when people put limits on themselves, and start to justify those limits. The only limiting factor we have is ourselves; if we want to change our situation badly enough, then we'd do something about it.
I **** seeing build where the owner of the car is whining about "no money this, and too much money that". Then I'll hear "I'm working with what I got, and I don't have the time or hookups like you."
I'm a full time student, moonlighting at a friend's shop(which lands me home at 4:30am sometimes). and then i have class and internship stuff too. I have a nice car, yes (e30 touring). But I only have so much I'm willing to spend on my s13. My friends are also super generous, as they have helped me bring this car this far by putting in the late hours with me and helping me craft it to where I want.
And don't be decieved; this car was built from garbage. Body panels that no one wanted, a car that had more rust than a junkyard before we fixed most of it... Shoot, my exhaust piping came from our trash pile, which happened to have an s13 exhaust in it (no muffler though). intercooler piping was all fabbed from scrap alum. pipe we had lying around, PS res was for a sohc motor so we made a new bracket for that, etc etc.
The only new parts in the car are the rod/crank bearings, piston rings, all gaskets/orings, all the suspension stuff, wheels, seat, some instrumentation, and the blacktop SR pick up tube.
Other than that, the rest is hand made or recycled. And this build was a learning process the entire way through. This was my first engine rebuild, and I did all the work myself (following the factory service manual to the t.) And I am lucky enough to have people who are willing to teach me and help me accomplish my goals.
You want to have a nice car? Then be willing to educate yourself and be willing to learn from others. Spend the hours in the garage, on the net doing research, and at work making your $ to fund your hobby. Determination and know how are the greatest tools one could have in the box. If your car is broke, fix it and catch up on maintenance. Don't waste your time and money having to re-do shit. Take your time. Do it once, do it right, and enjoy.

The thread title got me curious but this quote kept me here.
I'm interested to know why you said this.Originally posted by bataangpinoy View PostFirst off, let me thank all the veterans out there, and all those still serving. Without them, i would probably not have the capacity to write this article from the comfort of my leather couch.Sup. Call me Z.

Evan made up a coil pack cover

Fitted an ISIS radiator

Turns out my old one had a daughter board, and the tune on that rom went to shit.
That ecu came from this guy. This was before I knew about all his previous transgressions.

And ordered another E5 ecu for my car, for a damn steal too.
Also got the floor pan repaired, and put some heat insulation down.

Got it running, and put it on the road.

Got it aligned, and began my break in procedure.

Third day on the road, I mis judged a 90* turn, and put my pass rear into a curb.

I broke:
Traction arms
Rear upright
Rear wheel
Rotor
Axle
Diff
and bent the LCA,ruca and traction arms. Subframe made it out fine, and I put in a new ball joint and rear wheel bearing for good measure. I replaced all the arms(both sides) with the oem stuff I had kept for times like this. No pics of that. Car felt great that entire night though, pure driver error.
I can't adjust it anymore since I've installed the SPL eccentric lockouts, but with the corrected geometry from the SPL risers, the rear camber and toe in were very close to where i had it aligned to anyway.
1.5* camber, 0.4* toe in.
But here it is after the crash! (about 6 weeks ago)

Here's a vid of the exhaust note.

But monday night (9/9/13) was a sad night for me. I was on the highway and my HKS turbo called it quits. 15 miles from my house, it came on and off of boost intermittently, and then stopped boosting. And then smoke, then death howl and a nasty sound when it tried to make boost.
but I'm not too upset, not bad for a used turbo that I got for 100 bucks and a pair of wheels.

But the Garrett GT2560r to replace it is ordered up and eta is 2 weeks.Last edited by bataangpinoy; 09-21-2013, 10:16 PM.

good read, and a good message here.
Car isn't bad either
any more on your E30?
totally agree with the budgeting things you spoke of in that interview, I've found the longer a project takes the cheaper it gets. The trade off is how long you're willing to wait.
Friendships help too, I've also found you get what you give. The more generous you are with sharing/giving parts so will others; well mostly anyway.
