    Got free tickets to the Cal/Stanford game. That was sick.




    Got back my dad’s cherry picker for when we mate the tranny to the engine.



    Hard to tell, but made some more progress









    Flywheel and pulleys. Might as well clean em while I changed the main seals.

    Didn’t take a pic, but the rear main seal was shit, and had gunked up oil behind the flywheel.







    Cleaned up the throttle plate









    Not the best pic, but the shop teacher’s E28. Took this on my way out.

    $2500... Even with the exchange rate that is an absurdly cheap porsche. Cheapest is like $25k over here. Alas, i will have to wait a while yet before i can buy one. With that said, i love the completeness of the teardown and cant wait to see the complete engine, then the complete car!

    Thanks man. I'd love to take auto again, but It's first and second period, and all of my AP classes are 1st through 4th period and i can't change them. Luckily i kept a good relationship with the teacher. He just tosses me the keys and tells me not to fuck anything up. Haha

    Go for some CC shop classes. Hands on learning is always the best.

    That's really cool, I regret not taking any automotive classes while in school. I've actually considered going back to CC just to take automotive classes for fun. Glad to see you're just going for it, I'll be following this build closely. Keep it up dude.

    Haha I was really nervous! But like I was told “A bolt is a bolt” and I had been around my pops working on his cars when I was younger, my buddy Marco has a couple E30’s and I took auto shop freshman year and retained a lot from that with the mechanics and all of the theories about closed systems, combustion, timing, spark, fuel, and vacuum blah blah blah. And now there are just so may resources available and seeing everyone on here doing crazy things just inspired me.

    Thanks for all the positive feedback, just waiting on the alternator in the mail.
    Thinking about making some flat caps for the Borbets in the meantime.

I was actually just about to ask how the hell you knew what you were doing haha I'd be really nervous to take everything apart as you have and attempt to rebuild it. Luckily you have the internet and a few other solid resources to learn from. The internet is my best friend, it's how I learn just about everything.

    But this book is specifically air-cooled, and if I’m not mistaken, I think yours is newer and water-cooled.

    But what really got me going in to tear it apart and feel confident was before I bought the car and I knew it had problems, my friends dad who is a mechanic told me, “A bolt is a bolt”. And I don’t know why that hit me so well, but it just made total sense. There is finite number of parts and problems it could be, and although Porsche parts are ridiculously expensive, the car ran, and there could only be a certain amount of problems.

    I bagged everything, and organized it.
    Cleaned everything
    Measured twice
    If I was unsure, I’d take it apart and do it again.

    In this day and age, the internet is so helpful. PelicanParts has been an unparalleled source of information for my car. And the pleasure it bring to see progress and change that you made is just something else.

    Flying is just spectacular. Luckily our local airport is a few miles away, but there’s nothing like it. The place is full of WWII vets and a few Tuskegee airmen. Stories for days.



    Anyways, since the problem before was smoke, I wanted to get the oil chunks off of the heater box, because when I get the car running, they would cause it to smoke and give me a false sense of failure, so I got these cleaned up and need to hit some of the metal with high heat paint later.















    They're both done, I just forgot to snap a pic.

    I’ve gotten 17+ hours in this weekend on da Porsche. I'm too excited
























































    In my free time, I like to enrich America's youth by teaching them how to paint dinosaurs





    I wish I would have taken some pictures of how you do the timing, but my phone was dead. But you physically rotate the camshaft and rocker and put a pin through this little hole between the camshaft and timing chain I guess “sprocket”
    Get to to TDC on firing stroke of cylinder 1
    Set the clearance on #1 to 0.005 inches and attach this little micrometer to the top of the valve
    Turn the engine over and see the the cam turns the rocker again at tdc without the thousandths of an inch in change.
    The put a pin through this seemingly infinite combination of timing values and tighten it to something lik 150m foot pounds.
    Then repeat for #4

    Gotta clean up the intake manifold system. Lots of shit in there. Waiting on the alternator in the mail, and tha's all for now

    They're like feather crocs crafted by the angels. Gotta get some.

    For sure, I'll leave her to my dad when i go to college, but I don't plan on ever selling.

    i've always worn sambas, but have considered a pair of busenitz lately.

    anyway, great pick up. seems as if you will be taking care of it well. just don't do anything. and never sell it. ever.
