I usually don't read these kind of build threads, and I am always like
          "not another old BMW..."
But I got a strange feeling and I felt that I just had to read this.
Very inspirational story, and build. I honestly wish I had the determination(and time away from work) to do all of this to my car one day.

My car is going to need smog in January of next year, and I wont pass because when tidying up the engine bay I took out about 50lbs of the intake resonator, box, piping, and a tray... Unfortunately I threw it all away... The only mods you can see in my engine bay is an oil catch can and an air filter, and my air filter isn't CARB approved.
Going to start praying that I get a lucky break in life from now on.

(Take me to oregon with you)

          Cannot wait to read more.

haha, I recognize this! Let's go work on the car, put on some bumpers, hé, that screw is not looking good.. let's go inside the car and clean the dashboard....
hmm.... that's not what I intended to do! haha

This engine is looking nice and shiny, I was thinking of painting mine, but I was afraid the paint would chip over time, especially with my prep work(none).

True. I'm a bit a'scared of it chipping. My prep was about 30 minutes of wirebrush and superclean and a good rinse with water. 3 coats each side.

                      Time will tell.

So I continue to go overboard with cleaning and painting and such.

Its getting down to the wire as my wife starts college again on Friday. She's been very patient in dealing with no car for the last two weeks while I do completely unnecessary work. I need to have this done by Thursday night, which gives me a total of 16 hours to get it back in and running, hood on, coolant bled, tested, gas in the tank.

                      Wow, its looking hairy.

So, to celebrate my shortness of time, I went ahead and did much more slow and unnecessary work.

                      Few before and afters.

Oil pan and the 10mm bolts that hold it up.

                      Bottom and Oil Level Sensor

In order drop the oil pan the rear flywheel cover must come off, which I figured out after a few trys at prying the pan off.

There are 4 E10 External Torx bolts that hold that lower cover on. This gave me a chance to buy more tools.

Pan off and very dirty inside.

                      And outside.

I spent over 1 hour alone on the outside of the pan. For some reason this was the hardest caked on dirt I've seen so far. I really need something harsher to save time.

                      I like pictures of dirt.

Cleaned up and ready for paint.

                      Manly hands ahoy!

I had this paint lying around from my g35 days when I curbed two wheels in the same drive through, in the same night.

                      1st coat.

A Close-up of the paint color.

Flywheel cover and Level sensor cover got some love

                      2nd coat.

Dropped a 3rd coat and proceeded to clear.

2 coats of clear on each. Might have been a mistake though because it looked like beans when stepped away for the night. Hopefully it dries a little less splochy.

                      1st coat.

See what I mean about the Splochyness.

Though the Flywheel cover looks good.

Tune in tonight for daylight pics of the paint and the cleaned insides of the pan.

Also I got a new garage fridge. Thank you to my father in law.

Now to fill it with Cactus Cooler.

Why the hell would somebody paint aluminum silver? A nice polish would have been much nicer. But it's your car. Feed us with more updates!
