It's been a little while, but I figured I should update this since it's the only place that I have some sort of build thread going on.

Again I'm sorry for the mainly iphone pictures. Once the car is done I'll take some real pictures. I'm terrible at keeping track of builds, and the ease of using my phone is the only thing helping. The none iphone pictures are not mine, but ones posted by the respective photographer on tumblr.



Since the last post there have been quite a few changes to the car.


First I added the fiberglass hood, 965 front bumper, and a frame mounted splitter.





Next came the side skirts

While I was doing the work on the bumper and skirts I was also rebuilding a set of Hartmann Twists. I owe a big thank you to Thatcher for getting me new outers for the rear. It was a long wait, but it was well worth it.

This is what they were like when I got them. They were for a narrow body 911, had black centers, and polished lips.


I didn't think the polished look would go well with the car since the car is a little more raw and not a show car. I opted to go with a brushed outer and silver face.

Since these were taken I added a 10mm spacer to the front to help with clearance and to give it a slightly better stance.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but it is constantly progressing. I have a bit more body work to take care of and then everything will be taken off, fixed/prepped, and painted.

Finished installing the carbon fiber roof today. It's not pretty, and I need to make some sort of trim for the gap, but it's about 50lbs lighter than the sunroof hardware and roof skin.


Started by making the panel straight, cutting the metal roof off, and prepping the new roof.



Got some help from a friend. That's his 2002 as well.


We had some interesting cars at the shop today.


There was a considerable weight savings in just the sheet metal. The sunroof cartridge and hardware that was already cut out also weighs about 40 lbs.

Once we had the roof on we had to throw some heavy stuff on top while the adhesive cured

And I even talked a friend into cleaning the glue off of my doors haha

Had a weekend at the track and wrecked a wheel bearing on the way home. Starting work again next week on the body. Putting the roof on this weekend and hopefully the splitter next.

The bumper itself won't be wider (although I'm currently buying a widebody bumper if I don't like the way this turns out), the canards will be flush with the flares and open up to the spats. It's kind of hard to explain without a picture.


I'm hoping to get it similar to the way the canards are on this


The spats (piece on the bumper that block off the tire) will looks something like this

Thanks the Z8 and 512TR are customer cars and very nice cars.

The car isn't very fast in a straight line. It has around 240hp at the crank and weighs 2100lbs. Kind of like an e30 with an S50. I'd say an even race to 80mph would be an e46 M3. Above 80 it would pull on me.

The front bumper will meet the flares with a combination of the splitter, canards, and spats that will have fences on them (excluding the spats). I'm going to try a couple of things with the flenders and bumper set up.

Okay a little update of the project.

I installed some 31mm rear torsion bars.

Then I changed the air correction jets on the carbs.


After that I took it to the BMWCCA LA Auto-X at Fontana. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, but the car handled MUCH better with the new rear torsions. I was able to eliminate a lot of the understeer the car had before.


This weekend I'll be setting up for the splitter mounting to the chassis and making templates for the canards

Then I'll be at Buttonwillow for the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd.

Also to answer FJ's question about my sunroof panel, the following weekend I'll be installing a carbon fiber roof skin from GT-Racing. Here is a sneak peek at the roof.

funny you're concerned about a gauge sticking out on a racecar, but nevertheless, that's a sweet mounting location.

I was a little more concerned at the time, a big part of it was I also wanted to be able to easily glance down at my gauges on straights so I put it there so they were all near each other.
