  • A Sherman Schwartz story. (e28 content)

decided to get one of these going.

So here is my 1986 535i that I acquired after my buddy drove it all over the midwest and it quit running at 400k on the clock. Without a beat I got a trailer and pick him up.

after getting it on the charger for a bit I tired and got it to start but only with the MAF/airvane fully opened. Upon father inspection I notice a few cracked and missing vacuum lines along with a very nasty valve cover leak. For those who dont know some of these older BMW's are really touche about vacuum leaks so new hoses and gasket were ordered.

here it is waiting for parts it sat next to my e30

    ricer red hose!

with the new hoses on the car ran on its own but was still very rich.

next was the drop, cut springs for now

next was ditching the blue wheels for black

not having a rear bumper wasn't too good looking with when you can the diff, spare tire well, and gas tank so snagged an e34 bumper and made it work

the cars exhaust had fallen off somewhere on the highway in Arkansas on one of the previous owners trips, so I had one welded on after getting tired of constantly setting off car alarms.

then next was volvo lip and e34 headlight

then of got to enjoy the car for a while...

but then the running rich finally caught up with me and the cat got clogged. Compression and leakdown showed a burnt valve on #5 and #6, also discovered a broken motor mount and the center link was about to fail.

so the car would hardly run, engine about fall out, and suspension about to fail I decided to park it and get parts ordered.

so first was all new steering and suspension ordered, but the car would need to be degrease first.

the lower gaskets and new motor mounts.

    upper gaskets and head bolts

started to disconnected to pull the engine

then loaded it back up on the trailer and hauled it to a buddy's shop to use his lift

after pulling the driveshaft and removing the trans mount it came right out

now the car is back in my garage and I hope to make a lot of progress in the next few weeks to get him safe and road ready. Cleaning up the car will be a big goal too, for its age and miles the car is in great shape and with a little work I hope to get another 400k out of it.

sweet! I like e28's, you should ditch the rear bumper again and do something less boaty looking, that's all I can say for now

      EDIT'

And good progress! And you might need to tune the AFM to lean it out a little.

ebay, from what I understand its not a great quality and have been know to wear out fairly quickly. But considering this isnt a daily, I'm on a budget of sorts, and need to have the car ready for a show next month I went with it. I do plan on replacing parts with higher quality stuff as they wear out again, but dumping $2k-3k in OEM suspension parts is a lot all at once.

yea, I go back and forth on the bumper but considering I had it laying around and didn't have other options its staying for now. I did adjust the AFM but the last owner had already burnt #5 from the vacuum leaks and clogged the cat, so after the leaks were fixed it was still dumping fuel. I knew almost right of the bat I would probably be rebuilding the heads.

              Like it sir!

Good moves so far. Like that e34 rear bumper.

Can you post pics of the engine all apart?

Getting an e28 in about a year.

so the night I was disconnecting everything on top I was enjoying my budget beer and decided to cover my coil.

needless to say it was haggard, half asses, and very hipster. So after some searching I decided to go with my family heritage and very German last name.

snagged it on ebay for .95 cents, more suiting beer for a German car. This time more sober I was able to make a new non-crinkled coil holder.

Needs a little more cleaning up but I wanted to at least to make some progress on the car when I had no time to even get out to it today and I did. Tomorrow should be getting started on the engine rebuild!

little progress on the engine, been running on next to no sleep this week so I didn't get far as I wanted.

got it on the engine stand, I'd have to say see it out of the car its MASSIVE compared to all the m20's I've worked on.

everything was coming apart smoothly, especially for a 400k engine that's never been opened up, until I got to the water pump and snapped all the bolts except 1. I'll show the process of removing them soon.

but good progress in the two hours of getting to work on it.

looking quiet bare, but still massive.

the goal is to get the heads off thurs and if the damage isn't unrepairable to machine the valves to seat back down, then a lot of media blasting and painting to get it ready to reassemble. Tomorrow if I can get a nap in I hope to get sherman up on jacks to start replacing all the suspension and steering, but we'll see.

The goal is have Sherman ready for his first show April 15th, which is still 5 weeks away but with full time school, full time work, married life, home ownership, and struggling to get my track car ready it will be quiet the task.

                            Awesome work, and great project!

However, what on earth is the story with the transam in the background of your second to last pic? It looks like it starts its days by raping baby seals.

its another project in the shop, was nothing special for a long time but a lot of progress has been made on it this year. Last time it was on the dyno is was pushing 380hp, but now the turbo is on and it maxed out at 790hp before it started to go lean so now its sitting waiting for fuel upgrades.
