          • Thanks, I'm getting pretty motivated on getting these racks going again. Shop life has been pretty rough lately, all the expenses are really starting to add up. I've been trying to stay afloat by working on people's cars to make some side money. It's hard to make money when you have no money to spend on materials/tools/supplies. You gotta spend money to make money, and you gotta make money to spend money haha, kind of hard to juggle that. It's a good thing though, puts priorities into perspective and it's good to get scared sometimes, it really makes you get creative haha.

I'll go ahead and start asking for 10% on profit, since I'm giving some pretty sound biz advice.

Money issue? Easy.... You have prototype and skills to build. Create a kickstarter like campaign for your roof-rack idea. Figure out how many you can build and how much you'd sell them for; that's what you make your 'money goal'. BOOM! Instant backers of your build and pre-pay for your rack plus some cash in the bank

              You're welcome

I've thought about Kickstarter, but I feel like I need to figure out waaay more stuff before I actually pursue a campaign. It's definitely something to consider though. My main focus is coming up with a design that's simple enough to keep them structurally sound, lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, affordable to produce and safe to use. Off to the drawing board I go!

                    • I have to agree on the kickstarter for the roof racks, You don't really have anything to lose doing it, spend a bit of time getting supplier quotes and firming up the design. I've noticed 3 or 4 people what essentially built a business selling just on kickstarter.

Some good photography and it should sell itself on the vw/bmw boards. the low profile is unique and a great feature as many sit to high for the super low aesthetic. my fav part of it is the bracket for the drip trays, but that's my designer brain kicking in lol

                          • Now you see, everyday I wake up and somehow manage to end up on the s|w forums before I eat breakfast haha. Either way, I always see this thread near the top and wasn't really that interested since here in England you don't get many 2002s and I didnt think much of it. Then a day or two I bumped into a black 2002 with a bright red leather interior and holy shmoly, it was unlike anything I've ever seen before. Now here I am, hopping on my computer to see this thread right at the top of my screen... a couple of hours later here I am on page 43 after reading it all and I must say that this is a tremendous thread haha! Well done, like seriously not only do you have one heck of a car, but also your own garage and the skill to build anything you want out of metal. The wheel choice is perfect, absolutely flawless, and I have to say it doesnt really matter what colour you make it as I don't think theres a specific colour that would ruin it. Personally, I'd have it Alpine White, but afterall it's not my choice it's yours. Also, I think someones already mentioned this but it's so nice to have such a big thread written up so well, the fact that you're well spoken makes it 100x better. The roofracks are also amazing, you've definitely found a gap in the market as I've not seen any low profile ones before and they do look great, you should definitely do your best to make them a reality since they will sell like hot cakes, and put alot of dolla in your pockets. And finally, best of luck with the build, now that I've caught up with it I'm looking forward to more updates!

                            • Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement! I'm very appreciative of every comment I read, and I wish I could show that appreciation better! It means a lot, honestly.

That's awesome to hear man, I'm really glad my build could bring you some joy. Thanks for all the kind words. This build thread and all the nice comments have definitely fueled my motivation to keep pushing a lot of times, and although the 2002 has sadly been on the back burner for a few months, it's all for good reason and progress on that will come in time. I have been more focused on my shop lately, so it's not like I'm just too lazy to work on it, and that's what makes me feel ok about letting it sit there.

As for the roof racks, I really think I need to pursue these more. Lately I've been getting a lot of interest in them, and have people contacting me about them pretty frequently, so I think I'll take it as a sign to get my ass in gear and come up with the perfect design.

                              Stay tuned! And thanks again.
