  • 6 into 2 does go ('74 BMW 2002 content)

Hey. I am new here on Stance Works, but am not new to the world of cars and all the shenanigans surrounding that world. Just a little disclaimer here. English is my second language, my first being German, and my dyslexia does not help so if my English is bad try and cut me a brake
Any ways... I am working on a 1974 BMW 2002. When I first got the car I was planning on keeping it mostly original, how ever that dream ended when a trucks trailer hitch went through the front of the car. I found a good e30 donor car that had a running m20b25 for my 2002, and I had always wanted to put an m20 in a 2002. I thought to my self why not. Your car will never be show quality again so why not go for it. So I did.
I have spent a year so fare building the motor and collecting parts. The basics of the build are a BMW strait six from a 325i, a five speed from a 318i, a hybrid LSD diff unit using e21 case and gears and a e30 small case diff pumpkin, a manual steering rack conversion, a 2.5" stainless exhaust with a glass pack center and Magnaflow dual tip muffler, painless 12 circuit street legal race car wiring kit, and much more. Later on down the road the car will get a paint job and a coil over suspension. Here are a few of the things going into the 2002.
-m20b25 strait six from a 90's 325i (extensive head work and a 272 cam, stock bottom end besides the windage tray and crank scraper)

-Port matched intake with 19lb injectors

-Resurfaced and lightened fly wheel (3.8lbs lighter @ 14.8lbs)

-Custom Diff using e21 case and gears and e30 small case LSD pumpkin

-Hand build gauge cluster with some Auto Meter gauges

    -Magnaflow dual tip muffler

-Custom shortened pitman arms for the steering rack conversion

I am taking most of April off of work so that I can barricade my self in the garage and do the work that is needed to get all this stuff into the 2002. It will take a lot of work with a good amount of fabrication. Ill be doing some stuff that I have never attempted before.
I am super frickin excited and the car will be so much fun to drive when it is done!
Hope you all enjoy. Ill be updating this thread in the weeks to come.

    Cheers!

nice - do you have actual pictures of the car? Who did you go through for the m20 build? Why not turbo it?

I plan on a turbo down the road, but for now the few grand I spent on the motor its self should be fun enough. When I go turbo Ill have to rebuild the bottom end with new bearings and custom pistons, along with trying to cram an intercooler in the front of the car and cutting out the 2.5" exhaust for a 3" system. The car really needs paint and a nicer suspension and interior before that happens.
Morgan's Machine Shop in Walnut Creek has done all my machine work. The lead machinist there is an old guy named Tim. He is GREAT! Does anything from Ferrari motors to 4 stroke bike engines. They also have a great parts shop and the guy at the front desk, Chris, is so friendly and helpful and loves to talk cars.
Here is the car as it has been sitting for the last few months.

I'd like my car to look something like this in the end, just with a Turbo stile air dam and fender flares.

I'm in for this! I love the blue color of that last car. What are your plans for color?

Nice it's already looking pretty good and I'm sure that the 6 will be fun as is and the light weight 02.
The blue color and wheel flares are really nice. It'll be interesting to see the car progression!

Yeah. It should make where around 160hp at the wheels give or take some. I know a few guys that have about the same motor as I do and they are making about those numbers. The stock m10 (strait 4) made some where around 80-90hp from the factory so the 160 is a good jump up. The other problem with a turbo m20 in a 2002 is finding an LSD that will fit with out getting fried. I know a guy though the 2002 FAQ that has a m20 turbo '02 and he has gone through 9 LSDs! It is possible to chop and fit a e30 rear subframe in the 2002 so you can use a larger stronger diff, but at a certain point the 2002 starts loosing what it is to be a 2002 when you add all the e30 into it. Feel me? hahaha

Well I would like my car to have the original color which is the same as the dark blue 2002 I posted above. I have already talked to a local paint shop owner about getting the car sprayed. As soon as I get the motor in and running I am going to take the car down to him and see what it will take to get her painted. I am also going to loose the metal hood and trunk and replace them with fiber glass parts along with the turbo stile air dam and fender flares. At some point the car will be riding on a full coil over suspension front and back, have a half cage tied into the rear strut towers, and be on a staggered set of maybe 15x8 front and 15x9.5 rear. Thats my vision right now.
Its going to take me a while to recuperate funding after the engine goes in and paint is not cheap so it might take the rest of this year to do that. We will see.
