Good choice on the wheel situation. I didnt want to try to sway you away from your wheels but I thought the staggered idea was more trouble than its worth. Awaiting pics!

just got back to my own thread lol thanks for the heads up! i'm actually not going for a staggered fit anymore : /Originally posted by mshriver View PostHey I know its been talked and talked about on here but I was just thinking about staggered wheels on AWD and got thinking about R32s. VW kids stagger them all the time. So I did a little research and they use the Haldex system. I found a quote that says it allows for a 4% difference front to back. I dont know if this applies to the vr4 but just another staggered awd platform you can research when your picking your tire sizes.
thanks!Originally posted by ZammoTheChoppa View Postlooks nice
i'm picking up some 18x9.5's all around. unfortunately the 18x12's out back would require loads of fender work, and i just don't have the heart to do that to this car. someday i plan on owning another vr4 that i can beat the shit out of and not care as much lol i'll have some pics of the new wheels this weekend!
pulling off my turbos next week over spring break as well

I own a 2004 VW R32 and this also applies to this car. From the factory, it comes equipped with a Haldex unit which dictates how much torque gets placed front to rear. With that, and if you want to run staggered, Haldex only allows for a 4% difference front to back in rolling diameter tire sizes. Ie- I run a staggered setup on the R32, my fronts are 18x8 on a 215/40/18 and my rears are 18x10 on a 245/35/18. This keeps everything within check and I haven't had issues with my Haldex unit.

helped out my dad and his friend build his 50th b-day present in our shop; a nice 4 post lift! we need it considering we own about 12 cars total

anddd i took the car out for better pics. the backs fit perfectly, could use a little spacer but that's it. the fronts are being lame with the brake and strut clearance for 18x10, so we'll see how that works out. definitely raising it back up for a bit until i make a skid plate up front and get a new tucked exhaust haha
i love the flip ups

as you can see, my exhaust is basically on the ground haha good thing it's old and being replaced anyways

if it wasn't like 20* i would have washed her up

and that's all i got for now. gotta figure out the fronts and a final ride height i'm happy with. thanks for looking!

i wish i could convert it to RWD. there are places that can do it but it's expensive and the transfer case was never meant to handle all that power to the rear wheels. if i ever get a chance to do this i'm gonna buy another shell that i don't care about and make it into a track and drift car. and yeah it definitely depends on the forum to what people consider "right" or "proper" hahaOriginally posted by 340i View Posti like what you're doing here, not many people modify these cars, so it should be interesting seeing one done 'right' (depending on what forum you're on... hahaha)
just an idea that im not sure has been suggested or possibly not considered yet, have you thought about converting it to rwd? guys down here in nz do it occasionally with evos, which although 4 cylinders, probably operate around the same style gearbox/transfer case layout? im not sure exactly how its done, but imagine google will have the answer for you. here's how i see it:
1: doesn't matter about matching rolling circumference tyres front and rear
2: go and do drifts!
3: refer to #2.

if i can get the fronts to rub less i'll rock the drifter look until i can get smaller lips for the 18x12's since the 18x10 fit flawlessly out back. the fronts are proving to be a bitch! and now i know what its like to be so low, i have the coilovers maxed. i don't get how you guys daily this haha my exhaust scrapes, my tires rub and i couldn't get outta my cement barn onto a gravel driveway without scraping haha this is gonna take some getting used to

here's some blurry pics from tonight. i couldn't get th 18x10's to work up front, so i busted out my racing hart c5's 18x8 with spacers till it rubs. i had to use boards to get it outta my barn haha i'll wash it and get better pics on sunday

yeah i was told to run 265/35's as well by one of my friends, it makes sense. thanks! i'm gonna just grab my other 2 wheels and hopefully fit them all next time i'm home. the turbos have to be rebuilt anyways so i can worry about tires while the car isn't running

If you're going to go with 235/40s in the front, I'd go with 265/35s in the rear. 255/35s have a shorter sidewall than a 235/40 and it will be visually noticeable.Originally posted by PJ Prendergast View Postthat's the question everybody wants to know haha right now it's 235/255's but i need to get my diameters as close as possible
If you go with a 235/40 and a 265/35 the sidewalls will be almost the exact same height, which will look better and will also give you almost identical rolling diameters, helping calm any fears you have about staggering wheels.

i think 35's up front and 55's out back? i don't remember off the top of my head.Originally posted by 244Brick View PostYea, that's understandable. What is your side wall's size?
thanks! and yeah haha i drove the car around quite a few times when i first got it and it was on 17's up front and 18's out back, and it drove fine. we've had the transmission/transfer case rebuilt since then but i honestly think as long as i can get it as close as possible and avoid like 12 hour trips i should be okay hahaOriginally posted by ZammoTheChoppa View Postnice looking 3KGT bu the way
On the running staggered issue
i think its like smoking
Even though it can cause damage people still do it and some people suffer more damage than others while some suffer none ?
