Dont want to sound like a jerk but you must've measured wrong. Those wheels were 5x4.5 if they were definitely on a jeep. Thats pretty much the only bolt pattern jeep uses. Some older models used a large 5.5" circle but that wouldnt have been close. If those wheels were really 5x4.25 (which ive neer heard of) then they wouldve bolted up. Its unfortunate that they didnt fit though. I've always wondered what a american racing outlaw style wheel would look like on sedan.
sorry im only saying jeep wheels cause they look like jeep rims to me the dude never said what they were actually on. but they are definitely in between 4.25 and 4.5. I was thinking of changing my brake setup but the whole thing was it would be just as much if not more than just getting adapters. im toying around with a bunch of ideas. having everyones input has definitely helped.
Actually, no they didnt skimp~4 discs~ all around... IDK what the op plans are so i'll just leave it here..
I have drums in the read : / i keep seeing junk yard 240s with rear discs so i think i might switch them up one day. not sure yet. actually today we are going drive up to caroline to get another 240. newer 1992 244gl manual ofcourse. hopefully it only needs minor things.
went to go look at a 92 244gl today the lady said it was manual annnnnnnd it wasnt : ( everything on it was puuuurfect cept that it needed a new power steering pump and a tire or 2 since the were deflating. but any ways it was some nice country side picture taking up there.
As long as Volvo has been making cars, they've used the 5x108 PCD. I do know there are a couple European off-models that have awkward patterns, and a specific model of 1.9 S40s here in the States are essentially Mitsubishis, so they are using the 4x114.3 pattern. I believe Volvo has used that pattern longer than Ferrari in fact.
As far as the diff, you can do the popular Modded G80 diff, where you get the locking diff from certain 940s and trim the release flyweight so the locking mechanism engages at any speed, rather than staying open over 25mph. I've seen one of these diffs used on a 500whp track Volvo on sticky tires in person, with no issues for several years. Personally though, my '79 is getting a welded diff, until I decide on a Detroit TrueTrac or an Auburn Helical LSD. Do keep in mind that the rear diff in our cars is essentially the front diff out of a Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee/Wrangler, it's a 27-spline Dana 30. Any limited-slip or locker that will fit on the front of those trucks, will work in our rear axle.
Adapters are a good alternative, but I honestly think $300 in hardware to bolt up $100 wheels is a bit of a joke. Granted, I'll more than likely use the adapters I get for junkyard wheels at drift events as well, so I can't really speak haha. I plan on going through Adaptec for 15mm adapters to 5.4.5" PCD, and running 15x10 +13 steelies up front, and 15x10 +0 steels out back. For the record, Adaptec is the only company I'd trust for any adapter thinner than 20mm, I've had less-than-savory experiences with several companies' adapters in the past.
The body and paint of your car is amazing, especially for being a Virginia car.

I really appreciate all that you just said! i was looking into a g80 but i just wasnt 100 percent on what i should do. i dont think it would be to bad to weld my diff but then again i love regular road driving and I fear a welded diff would mess with down shift rev matching and such around corners. i just dont want to spin out and hit a tree cause i have a welded diff. then again i would like to just make a turn and be able to drift around easier than this god damn open diff i have now.
as far as adapter go, ive been searching around and i cant find any 15mm adapters. I'm not sure if i should call adaptec to check and see if they would make them for me but if they cant then it looks as though I will have to get the 25 mm ones. that would make my total offset like -53 which im not sure how thats gonna look on my car. looks like ill be rolling pulling and maybe putting flares on my fenders. id rather get 15mm adapters.
i also need to change all the ujoints and the csb sooner than later. still not sure if im trying to just stay na or turbo the bitch. up in the air i guess.
again i feel like a fool for thinking i had rear drums. idk what i was thinking cause every other 240 ive seen has been rear discs and so is mine i guess i was just to use to my old accord. anywho thank you for all the advice
IDK If im going to get in trouble for saying this, but adaptec qouted me (i think) 360ish for 4x114.3 to 5x114.3. Which i think is good for a Top of the Line part!
Adaptec will make a 15mm adapter, you'll just have to trim your lug studs down and use shorter lug nuts. I've heard the ballpark range is $350, which I'll gladly pay for quality bits.
As far as a welded diff goes, I daily drove my last Rx7 for over a year with a welded diff no problems. Just anticipate the rear to grip when you don't want it to, and slip when you don't want it to haha. I don't like lockers personally, but the Volvos I've driven with modded G80s were a blast - all the traction when you need it, and all the comfort and cornering when you aren't driving hard.
I can see the confusion with discs and drums, as 200s use a drum type parking brake out back. When I got my '79 I had to double take, as it didn't have rotors or calipers and I only saw the parking brake shoes.

lol well im glad im not the only one. i think it was just a lapse in judgement when i was thinking if i had discs or drums in the rear. i think what i might do is get a g80 and try it out. im not all up on what all to do to install it but im sure turbo bricks will have a thread for that. the only time i can have fun on the pavement is when its wet outside. its a blast but then again id like an lsd or welded diff to get the tail out a lil easier. even on dirt roads i can feel how im having to whip it harder than some of the other lsd dif cars ive driven.
Also of importance to note, since your car is an '86 you should have an electronic speedometer with a sensor on the diff cover that reads off the toothed/windowed wheel on the carrier - the G80 has a different wheel that physically fits, but you'll notice there are a bunch more slots than your original diff has. You have to have the bearing on that side pressed off to swap that wheel, else your speedo won't work. Some people care, some don't. Everyone I know that has done the swap with the exception of one has a cable speedo in their car [for the record, pre-85 cars I believe have cable speedometers], and the one guy that has the electronic speedo just uses a speedometer app on his iPhone and sets it on the dash.
So, to sum it up in order of simplicity:
-You can weld the diff simply and easily and keep your speedo function;
-You can swap in a modded G80 and ignore your non-working speedo; Or
-You can swap the toothed wheels between diffs, install the G80 and enjoy.
maybe this is a bit of a disappointment but ive decided just to weld up my diff. im not to savy when it comes to differentials i need more learning in that department.
test fitting some tires in the near future for the redrill to 5x114.3 et-28's. i really wanna put these babys on sooner than later. kinda canceled a trip to kentucky just to save some moola and now i can go to springfest may 12th. hopefully that will be a blast!!!
anywhoo heres some more pictures. garrett and I decided to drive around richmond and see how many volvos we can spot. ended up seeing some sick cafe bikes that i wasnt fast enough to take a pic of but i still got some good ones of a starion we saw having fuel problems in the parking lot of 711. tried to help him out a wee but looks like he has fuel filter problems. also about the end of the day before we left i saw a sick stock 144 so i whipped around and took some pics.
garrett with a camera...
trying to adjust my clutch and figuring out that the threads arent tight enough to hold the adjustment i made :/
we thought this was funny. oldest parking pass went back to 1985 lols, it was a manual mazda too!!
