  • Walter the wagon

Cut/paste from another forum, so please excuse me if the grammar/structure looks weird.

This is my slow build of my 1985 Cressida wagon (MX72)

After I got it and swapped out the ugliest set of steelies I could find to give the owner his wheels that came with the car:

Bought some new studs 7mm longer:

Back to approximate stock height with a slight drop (cut 1.5 coils up front and 2 in the rear:

After I cut 1.5 coils (left) what the previous owner was riding on lol (right). It looked good, but damn was the ride horrible.

Took off my rear end for a mk1 supra rear (3.73 ratio, disc, & lsd), much better option for the w58 in it.
    Old rear:

Cut and had a solid rod welded into a portion of the panhard bar to meet the .5" extension required. (Bar was cut, then a 2" slice was done on each side of the cut, rod was welded on those lines, then fluxed on that actual space... looks like shit, sturdy as can be).

What I cut in the rear:

Never take rear discs for granted again! BTW I got all new rotors/pads/hardware, just didn't take a picture after mounting.

Bought a ceramic coated turbo manifold (7mgte, but fits the exhaust ports of the stock 5mge) planning to turbo the stock motor:

Painted some cheap wheels (these are actually steel lol)

Got the rear end up and running, what a joy it is over the old one: (only crappy pictures since it was already late). Still need to figure out the routing/attachment of the e-brake cables.

Figured I want my car to be reliable so I bought a 7mgte instead of boosting the stock 5mge.

    Bought this for the motor:

Bunch of random pictures while being taken down to just the long block. Nothing interesting, more so just for reference when I put it all back together over the next month or so. Gaskets came in this morning & the block is now bare... planning to clean everything, and put it all back on with new gaskets/grommets/etc. The 5mge oil pan/pickup will be the last thing on since that motor won't come off the car till I swap it.

No big updates, just cleaned some parts... God this thing has so much carbon build up its disgusting.
    What is this?

    Ohhh:

Got a bunch of parts clean from the years of neglect...

God this is going to take forever lol.
    Everything looks like this:

    Now looks like:

No big updates, just painted the block, the pulleys, and installed the new water pump.

    Still continuing to prep everything...

(UPDATE) not using this HKS piece since I will now be running stock ECU/wiring and no megasquirt to save money for now.

Got a little more work done, not sure if I can use it as a replacement... we will see, maybe I can play around to mount it.

    Thanks

Went fastner shopping yesterday; God it is so satisfying lol.

Spherical rod end mounted to the coil pack stud/grommet to have the HKS pipe as a TB/intake piece (and cut off the other mounting location so it can sit flush).

Studs replaced with bolts/locking washers on the water pump since I will be running MSII (electric fan).

    New parts:

Got a cluster this will be installed before the engine. It will be a pain to wire up since my cluster doesn't use these clips.

Overall plans are to get some nice wheels (15/16 x 8/9 et0-10), the painted american racing are just rollers till the motor goes in. I just want the car to be reliable enough that I can sell my 08 GTI to have just one car that never skips a beat. Thanks for looking and I will be sure to post updates... I have had this car now for about 1.5 months.

Small update in my garage: Built my own wheel rack last night. Only cost about 50 dollars, sturdy as hell, and center shelving is removable.

Thank you sir, hoping to get some more work done on it over the next month. Wiring will be quite complicated putting in the digital cluster as well as the 7mgte with a hacked up harness.

I love Cressidas, especially wagons. You should just go ahead and buy a few extra head gaskets, you're going to need them but on a serious note; what are those wheels and what size are they??

LOL I got the headgasket in the rebuild kit, but I am leaving that and the timing alone at this moment. I want to get the motor up and running, if it needs front/head seals I can replace after its in the car. Wheels are 15x7 et0, I can easily fit a 15x9 et0 in the rear comfortably, no camber though since I am live rear axle.

Is it a grey plug harness? I would definitely be interested, does it fit this ECU?

Not much of an update, I got a little more done with the engine, and I ended up having to helicoil 5 out of the 7 exhaust manifold studs:

LOL the aluminum is so soft!

                  After:

Sold some wheels and left my gloves in the parking lot, what a bummer. :bash:

I like where this is going, but I can't imagine selling an '08 GTI and relying solely on an old Cressida.

That cluster is digital? Suddenly, this is one of my fav. threads on Stanceworks. I'd kill for a car with a digital tacho, haha

                          Looks interesting!

Thanks hope to have more to come, went to a local auto parts place to buy 30 ft off various vacuum hose. They don't have metric ID so that won't be updated today lol.

I modded my 08 GTI, but I want something old I can wrench on and not be financially damning. I have had tons of cars, but this wagon will fit all the needs I have been looking for with all the others. Also planning to sell the GTI so I can put more on a downpayment for my house.

Thanks, yah the digital cluster was an option for all the mx72/73 cars, problem is that the wiring for the older ones (mine) is a ribbon style connector not the normal clip. I have to wire it all up manually (solder), replace the fuel sending unit (digital), and lastly the speedo bracket.

Planning to smog the car this weekend with the 5mge, after I come home I will be pulling the motor same day lol.

How much I cut is perfectly fine since even in the air the spring is never free, the way the previous owner cut I am pretty sure was not nearly as safe. Also cutting in the rear of mine helped since the mk1 supra springs I used were approximately 2" longer, but rates were different since it weighed less than my wagon.
