shit day... but here's a fast little update,

      went for a drive
stopped to smell burning and see smoke coming from under the car... looked out to find a black line in the pavement that had been following me around for a couple miles and a slowly growing puddle under the car

poured oil dry on it cause it was in the street in front of a friend's house. tried to get the car on a trailer but it wouldn't fit. broke my lip and stuff trying. so used the trailer ramps like a jack and squished quicksteel into the hole. the drain plug was missing... guess the threads ripped out cause it caught somewhere. so no more plug. who changes their oil anyways?

      got it home, finishing glaze

then more sanding yadda yadda and its currently primed. gonna check the pan one more time and make sure all is good then I hit the road once i've showered and packed.

Capitan, all systems are go. Or at least close enough.

Paint is laid. gotta do the finish work tomorrow morning or something. and there's some overspray to clean up but otherwise its not too bad. I'm not pumped on the results. Kinda rushed things. The prep work was terrible... lots of sand marks in the paint. maybe they'll buff out maybe not. Either way i'm gonna wind up sanding it back down eventually since parts of the arch are pretty wavy. everything directly under the quarter window looks pretty good though. I took a bunch of pics of the paint and reflections, no time to explain each one but you get the idea. gotta shower up and hit the road!

in some the reflections look pretty good. in others you can see the panel waves. I'll have a few shots of everything completed and together tomorrow at the show. HOES.

What primer/paint/clear did you use? All straight out of cans?

Lookin' good man, this thread definitely shows the strength of car enthusiasts and how even when shit is going rough, a single project can really turn the spirits around.

All the effort only to be painted with cans :/

I mean, I'm gonna re-do it. No question. I just ran out of time but I wanted to make the show, not really to show the car, just to be there. Pride reasons I suppose. But even when I do it again, it will be the exact same paint, from the exact same cans. Putting it in a booth and using a gun would be easier in terms of actually laying the paint I guess, but when the end result is the same, it just honestly doesn't matter. People give rattle cans a bad wrap, but I can honestly make it look exactly like the rest of the car. Actually, after I fix the bondo and paint it in daylight, then do the finishing work with wetsanding and buffing, it would probably look better than the rest of the car. It had a shitty respray at some point.

Thats really why I wanted to take it on, John. And thanks man I appreciate it. Yeah its all canned. the primer was rustoleum building primer that i ran some really rough sand paper over before I just coated the rustoleum gloss enamel black over it. Its really no representation of what I can do, just thrown together to get down the road. But I made it and that was the point.

So the 2 days was really more like 4, but it seems nobody was counting anyways I got a couple really shitty pics I'll load later. I'm gonna take a hardcore nap. I plan to re-do the bodywork and figure out another option for the front suspension then I'll sport it as a cool little daily. DA's are such neat little cars.

I think it really means a lot, this and now that Mike is back in another BMW really helps to show the strength of can enthusiasts and to show how you just gotta get back into the game and put whats in the past behind you.

I was more wondering about the paint since I have a few colors of colormatched rattle can to fix my horrible bumpers that I dont want to pay for a full paintjob on front and rear bumpers since the rest of the car isn't up to fresh paint standards. I appreciate the response, sometimes on larger forums and threads with lots of activity, comments and questions get lost, but I appreciate the quick response with just enough information. Did you do any buffing or final wetsanding to it?

well in that case, you can normally go to a paint supply store and have them mix aerosol cans of color matched paint for about twice the normal cost of a color that likely won't match. if you're good at spraying, nobody would ever know the difference, and its a nice option for people without a ton of funds or access to a booth/ painting equipment.

I would normally wetsand and cut and buff if I wanted a really nice result, but seeing as how I plan on sanding it back off and my prep work was really shoddy, I just skipped it. I think I'll update this thread later down the road when I re-do that panel with step by step pics and descriptions of how I did it.

And really thanks for the input man. I kinda wanted to prove something to myself and encourage the community through this little build deal. If it worked for somebody, totally worth it. (plus its way less embarassing to be seen in now )
