How does it keep the grinding down?

By putting copper on the back side, the molten metal while welding will be held in place over the hole from the copper piece. Makes it easier to form the metal over the hole

So does the other metal not melt into the copper? does copper have a higher melting point?

          • if im correct you cant weld copper, it it mainly used to absorb the heat from welding to help with distortion os panels and such, but it your backing a pinhole your filling you should only really have to grind down one side o the hole if you get a good "seal" with the copper.

ps harbor fright sells this doodad that has come in handy for me.

Nope, the molten metal just sits on top of the copper piece until it hardens again. I've never had it stick together or anything.

              • I use the same method, it make filling slighlty bigger holes much easier.

I used a length of pipe that t hammered flat and folded over a few times, it is easy to bend and shape to fit in tight area and gives a nice handle so you can hold it without a glove.
