took the car to the carwash to give it a rough clean, then took a quick spin upto blue rock dam to dry it off and take a couple happy snaps. i then proceeded to smash the living crap out of the splitter on the way back. short deep dips in the road in 100k zones, sofaking stupid

and so begins the next mod, carbon airbox
started making up the base of it today, will add foam to it, and carve out the shape i want, then attempt the lost foam method for building it with carbon cloth

airbox fits after much chopping and slimming, its a tight fit at the back, but should be fine, as its only hoses its sitting against. need to mark where outer 2 trumpets go again, and remove as much material from the top back section as i can to allow for rock as the engine revs
first time ive removed the plenum since putting the motor in, still looks fairly clean. really need to do my powersteering hoses oneday though
will need to make a new throttle cable bracket, which i might get one laser cut to replicate oem, just with differences to clear the box
had to remove a decent amount around the strut tower, which i was expecting
clearance to the strut brace is fair close, ill probably file the top down to a bit of an angle on the inlet side
and maaaybe some along the top of the box itself, gotta make sure filter will still fit(might mean adding some more at the bottom of the box)
dipstick seems to sit nicely in the corner here, just need to extend the bracket(5min job)
charcoal canister still fits where it is(possibly needs an angle change), and power steering res is still accesible with inlet removed
edit: just brainfarted, hopefully can move holes for trumpets up 5-10mm to give more clearance, will just bring box closer to motor a touch.

final test fit today, had to cut one section off for better clearance to heater hoses, and only 2 spots that ill slim down before the first layer of carbon fiber goes on.
happy with where it sits, and how it feels sitting there. bit more clearance around strut tower now, ill be doing the inlet section after the main section is done and test fitted to the car in carbon form.
bit more clearance around the strut brace now, and i should get away with the original throttle cable bracket
and heres the main area i had to cut some out of. before cutting, it pushed against the heater hoses at the firewall. ill smooth this out a bit at work, so laying the carbon on is easier
oh, and my carbon cloth and stuff turned up the other day

Sweet! Love your e36, one of the best I've seen so far and love cleanliness of the engine bay. Goodluck with the carbon air box on the cheap, seems like it'll turn out great.
