I'm thinking Volvo but such high mileage makes me worried. How are they reliability wise?

Mercedes is rwd, no so great for the snow, but I won't have a car payment if I got it.

My vote would be for the Volvo if you're prepared for it to eat you to death on the repairs. Weird things like struts at $500 a corner. The engines themselves are fine but make sure the angle gear is in good shape as well as the suspension. I'm biased though; I had an S60R for a while.

It had a weird issue where the right headlight wouldn't stay on and you'd have to turn them off and back on again; we couldn't figure out what it was. May have been a ballast. It was still like that when I sold the car. Let's see.... then I had to replace two axles in the front. May have had something to do with learning how to drive a stick on it....

Other than that it was a pretty reliable car, just a little quirky. Luckily the dealer I bought it from did timing belt/water pump/etc etc before I got it.

As long as you get the car on a lift to confirm the AWD is functioning correctly and there isn't any weeping from the angle gear and it's been kept up on maintenance you should be okay.

The 2005+ models are definitely more desirable; they have color matched trim which helps it look a lot sleeker. Also (though I doubt you'd get an auto) the automatic transmission was torque limited for 2004 and so there was only 260lb/ft until third gear.
