Mike BurroughsIn its 6th year, Luftgekühlt, the premier all-aircooled Porsche event, has somehow raised the bar once more. With an incredible catalog of Porsches in store for an absolutely massive audience of show-goers, attendees were presented with cars set amongst Universal Studios’ “New York Backlot:” a true-to-life movie set and stage that has presented the Luft crew the opportunity to take over what may as well be Downtown Manhattan.
Each year, the team at Luftgekuhlt seems to outdo themselves. What once started as a small gathering of friends around a handful of air-cooled Porsches has quickly become one of the events of the year, growing in size and “cool-factor” at an exponential rate. Last year, in the spring of 2016, they threw in an extra curveball, introducing an unexpected build under the moniker, “LuftAuto.
John Benton has obviously been cut from a different cloth. In a community where many of the older shop owners hold on tight to the trade secrets they’ve learned over the years, John is an open book. Rather than hole up in a garage, jaded by decades in the automotive world, John is the first to share what he’s learned and openly reach out when he needs help.

You leave content, having filled your quota of cool cars for the day. For a car guy it’s hard to ask for much more than rows of your favorite cars, but as I drove home from the third Luftgekuhlt show I found myself energized by so much more.
