Event posters are where art and automobiles have come together for decades, so when I began discussing potential collaboration projects with Formula Drift, my mind instantly jumped to the prints that so often proceeded races. Despite the style that runs rampant through the drifting culture, it’s rare to find art that echoes the dynamic atmosphere of the events.
As the 2013 Formula Drift season came to its final event, GSR Autosports driver Michael Essa sat with a sizable points lead. It was abundantly clear that the cards were in his favor – only two other drivers stood a reasonable chance to take home the overall win: Chris Forsberg and Fredric Aasbo, and it was still a long shot for both. Third place, however, was still up for grabs, and the Nitto team still stood a chance to take home a trophy.
Formula Drift has returned for its 10th year, a major milestone for the series. New cars, new drivers, and new courses are thrown into the mix with some of the decade veterans and venues that have brought the series to where it is today. Round One in Long Beach, California marks the first event of the season, and as always, the adrenaline was non-stop and the crowd was larger than ever.
As the sun set over Irwindale, California, Formula Drift Round 7: Title Fight was underway to settle the battle for 2012 Formula Drift Champion. Entering the final round of competition, seven drivers had a chance of securing the 2012 championship, but only one would be crowned.
As the sun dipped below the tips of the mountains on the horizon, the asphalt of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway began to glow with the light of fluorescents. Bits of tire surrounded the edge of the track like beaches of rubber sand. Practice was over, and true to its name, Round 6: After Dark began.
Slivers of sunlight remained as the cars gridded up. Drivers took turns boiling their tires before they were paired against their opponents.
