It’s been a habit of mine, among many others, to get lost on the pages of Google, Wikipedia, and RacingSportsCars.com, enjoying the hidden gems of racing history scattered across the web. The first time I came across Dinan’s 540i, I was immediately captivated – something about its stature left a lasting image in my mind.
In 1972, BMW brought about a significant change to their business plan: in replacing the New Class, which arguably saved the company, BMW sought to add a model range that departed from sportiness, and instead, took a path towards comfort. The result of the decision was the birth of the 5-series, a 4-door counterpart that fell between the featherweight fun of the 2002, and the more sizable E3 sedan known as the “Bavaria.
For most die-hard BMW guys, the Dinan name is synonymous with some of the coolest, turbocharged shark-nosed four-round-healight-having Bavarian rockets of the ’80s, period. For an even broader audience, however, the very same name is synonymous with over-priced aftermarket BMW parts, upsold solely because of a name and badge.
