As Shark(Nose) Week begins, it’s important to start with a bang. The E9 CSL’s successes were pivotal in helping to define BMW’s brand as a whole; without the devastatingly fast touring coupe, BMW’s sport-luxury trademark approach to motoring would likely never have seen the success it has today. As for what an E9 CSL actually is, let’s paraphrase the basics.
In 1975, 40 years ago, BMW Motorsport’s overall win at the 12 Hours of Sebring stood as a resounding introduction to the American market. Just days before Sebring, BMW of North America was born, and with it, racing efforts that have continued forth to today. The 3.

Our friend, the talented Kris Clewell, returned to The Hawk at Road America, one of the USA’s most prevalent annual vintage races, and did what he does best: capture the beauty of racing. With such a full weekend – more than 400 cars present and ready to be put against period competitors – it proves difficult to do them all justice. There’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned photo dump; we figure we’ll let the pictures do the talking.
