Quick lense question

Whats the purpose of a lens like this

But why is it so small?

there is no zoom

i'm guessing its small so it doesn't take up as much space. its a lense that you can take with you if you aren't taking your entire setup.

Its less obtrusive than a "larger" lens. Say if you are doing street candids, you would blend into the crowd better than with a larger lens. Also I imagine its much lighter and easier to carry around. 40mm isnt a bad focal length for some stuff, I wouldnt mind trying one out.
