  • Canon Vs Nikon

I know this has already been covered in multiple threads about what to buy and what lenses people should get blah blah blah. Ive been looking at a few cameras on DPreview and cant seem to make a decision on which one would suit me better. I am still a rather new shooter and currently I am using a Olympus E-520. I like the camera but the Olympus following is very small. When I have a question about which lens would work best or what settings I should use for certain things its hard to get a answer if any. My plan is to switch to either a Canon or a Nikon. Cost wise I would like to stay under 700 for the body and lens. My plans for the camera are mostly automotive photography, rolling shots, still shots, add in some family photos with the dogs, and when I get deployed I want to be able to shoot different landscapes, buildings and whatnot.

So I guess in end my final question is what do you guys personally recommend and why? If you are recommending a camera that you personally own could you possibly post a photo that you have taken as well.

Here are a few shots I have taken over the past year and really hoping I can improve upon improving my camera.
    Thanks
    Jon

I can recommend canon only because that's all I've ever used. It would be hard for most to answer the question fairly unless they've shot with both. I would recommend going to a place where you can personally try both and choose whichever feels best to you. Personally I would also invest in a lower cost body such as a T2i and get some decent glass with the rest. I'm a fairly new shooter too and find the rebel's easy too get used to.

I shoot with a t1i, here are two photos with it.

Agreed, I have owned a few Canons EOS's and just enjoy them. I would guess that you would want something like an canon t3i... you can pick up a new one for 599$ with the 18-55mm lens and still have some money left over for another lens. 1/4000 shooting speed, pretty sweet for rollin shots. but just my opinion... goodluck

I own a Nikon and that's because they were readily available to me for the right prices, not because I chose them. Given I do REALLY like the button layout and extra dial you get (to my knowledge canon doesn't offer a second dial with it's competitor to my camera) I'm not going to tell you to go out and buy a Nikon. And no one here should tell you to go out and buy a Canon. Each camera will have advantages and disadvantages. The only advice you should take is go out and find both. Whichever feels right to you, button layout, viewfinder, how it fits in your hand, etc, etc. Get that.

My first camera (dslr anyway) was a Nikon d3200 with the kit 18-55 and a 35mm f/1.8. You can get that same setup for around your price range, and probably a little less. Definitely if you choose the d3100. If you want to dish out a little more the d5200/5100 is a great camera to start out with. If you have more experience I would go with that.

Canon I don't know much about, but my girlfriend has a t3i with a 50mm 1.8. That 50mm f/1.8 is about 100 bucks which to me is a great deal. Sharp lens, very clear. If you get nikon get the t3i or t2i. From my knowledge the t4i and t5i are not worth the extra money at all.

If you're confused on two cameras (say the t3i and the d3200 as an example) then simply google "t3i vs d3200" and click on the snapsport link. They compare cameras and give you lots of detail on advantages and disadvantages of each.

tl;dr both brands are very capable and neither is better than the other. Most people who tell you otherwise are honestly just brand loyal or haven't tried anything else. Find what fits your hands best and you can't go wrong.

Here are some shots I got with the Nikno d3200 and 35mm f/1.8

I would show you pictures with the t3i and 50mm f/1.8 but she refuses to upload anything, just know that it's capable of producing the same images!

Rolling shots at 1/4000th would be completely stood still. Personally I think rollin shots should be done around 1/30th-1/60th. Any camera where you have control over shutter speed, aperture, iso will allow you to produce great rolling shots.

I do rolling shots depending on speed, I try to match it as close as possible, thats how I took the one of the VW above.

Exif shows you shot it at 1/50th

I was just saying that at 1/4000th a rolling shot would just be a still.

maybe as a third option I should just buy another lens, it just sucks with the lack of Olympus followers if you know what I mean. The E-520 is a great camera in my mind and all the ratings seem to be very good.http://www.dpreview.com/products/Olympus/slrs/oly_e520

But at 1/50th if we were doing 55ish if I remember correctly came out perfect in my eye lol. Others may think differently but for me Im very happy with the outcome lol

Sony is also another great one you should look into. A lot of people forget that canon and nikon aren't the only camera producers.
Like I said, snapsport comparisons will help you LOADS when juggling options.

EDIT: don't limit yourself to olympus lenses. Some third party companies like Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina make lenses for Olympus also.

Time to start looking into lens's instead of cameras. Why sell a good camera for the lack of following. Ive already learned most of the button layouts for the Olympus so why not just upgrade the lens. I think you guys just helped me change my mind on what to do. Thanks again everyone for the replies.

Any recommendation on which lens I should look into lol, 14-42 and 40-150 are the current lenses I have for the Olympus, just the kit lenses. I use the 14-42 for most everything unless someone is at the far end of the track and im trying to get a shot of them drifting another corner

14-150 is a great focal range you've got. 14-200 would be perfect. What are their apertures?

Ive also only shot with Nikon and love it. But like a few have said before the only real reason is because thats what my dad grew up shooting with so I was somewhat born into it. Trying to compare the two (Nikon and Cannon) is almost impossible. The camera doesnt make the photographs the photographer does. Here are a couple shots with my D5100:
