Replacing my older DSLR need some help.

I had a Nikon D60 for under a year before someone broke into my house and took all my camera gear. That was a few years ago and I am looking to get back into the game

I am in no way a pro and have for the most part been looking at the Canon T3i and the new T4i. $1300 is my budget and that has me inline with the Canon T4i with 18-135mm EF-S IS STM Lens. With that budget what different combos would you recommend leaning more on the T4i body side of things?

I am looking to shoot both stills and videos this time with 90% of my subjects being cars sitting still or on the track. I know I dont have a ton of money for a big zoom lens. I am just looking for one or two all around lens to get me started.

I did find a Nikkor-N 1:1.4 f=35mm in great shape for free last week and have been doing some research to adapt it to a Canon body.

The kit you are looking at, at the moment is a great starting point - with the oppurtunity to take some great photos with some more professional glass infront of it.

For that budget you could get a 7D body quite easily, and start to work up to some decent lenses. When I was in the market for a camera, I used my age old adage of buying the absoloute best that you can afford, not regretting it and not having to replace it. hense I ended up with the 7D.

They say that a photo is 70% Lense and 30% Body, and if you believe that, then spending the money on some decent glass is probably best for you - but with me I thought having the best body I could (and camera too would be a better path to take.

if you're sticking to a budget go for one model lower on the body and invest more in the glass.

when I picked up my 60D (I wanted the 7D but was working to a budget), I went for a Sigma 30mm f1.4 ex prime and used that for a couple of months. Comparing the images with a friend who simply shoots with the 18-55 kit, the quality really does speak for itself.

personally, I'd probably go body only and get yourself a really good lens, either a Sigma, Tamron (as they perform well for their money IMHO)

Sorry for the delay on the reply. I was looking at a VW Bus in a barn and got stung all over by some bees. They put me in the hospital for a few days. not good times.
