  • Dog owners: Questions on training collars?

I've been thinking about getting mine a shock collar for training. Not the electric fence collar, but for voice command/leash walk training.

How many of you guys have used them? Which brands do you recommend. Other alternatives?

Not trying to spend a fortune, but I would like to get something effective.

    Thanks!

    I used a bark type.

From what i found it just turned in to a game for the dog...He found a new pitch to bark at so it wouldnt shock him...

Dogs are smart and learn from doing the same thing over and over. The dog has a bed time and a time he needs to be up and he knows it better then i do. The barking was a bad habit he picked up and after all the games i went back to the paper...I paper trained him as a puppy and if he barks during the day i smack the rolled up paper on something...The noise scares him and after a week he stopped.

When i got him i watched a video on how to train a dog in 10 minutes or something and it had great info...What i took from it was simple. People use the choke collar thinking choking the dog is the answer...What it is that helps them learn is the sound and getting there attn. So my training was simple. Rolled up newspaper(light painless but grabs his attn. and easy to grab for) For potty training(took 2 hours btw) he crapped on the carpet and as he stopped. Put his nose near it told hime no and smacked his butt with it....HE freaked I put him outside. he got that faster then any dog i have ever had... After that hed go to chew on something that was not his id wack the paper on a table or something hard...my hand, leg, the floor or a wall id say his name so hed look at me and because of the paper would get freaked out. Id take the thing he was chewing on and replace it with something else and put the paper away...My 140 pound boxer now is trained to watch the car, house and hasnt chewed anything except a fence post trying to get someone tormenting him on the other side... I couldnt punish him for it because he was trained to do it. He has to be one of the best dogs i have had i trust him with food on the table and me in another room, hes great with kids and i made the mistake of hopping a fence after a late night run and before my feet hit the ground he had me by the shin and was dragging me across the ground...Once i said his name and gave my command he looked like he does when i get home at night.

The paper thing isn't explained all that great and there is more to it but my point is if you do something do it over and over again to the point your annoyed....do it day in and day out..Remember dogs short term memory is crap...Best explained...Walk in to a room and forget why you went in to it.. Walk out and forget why you left..
