You should drive all of the cars you mentioned and make the decision yourself. I would personally shy away from SAAB and Audi unless you have an extensive mechanical knowledge and the ability to wrench.

Sounds like you bought a bad car. My E36 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned- you just need to do the basic maintenance.

I understand the no car is boring advice. I had a volvo that most people would say is boring but that car was a blast to drive.

Had an S60R, 2004, 6MT, black over Gobi interior.

Great cars but be prepared to maintain them. Engine/transmission themselves aren't bad and will last but your real problems lie with the Four-C adjustable struts ($400 a corner) and the angle gear for the Haldex AWD failing. These can be $3k to replace.

Still, 300hp/295lb/ft, 6MT, AWD, fancy computer-controlled suspension, incredibly comfortable interior, sleeper factor.

I do all the basic maintenance. Everything myself. This car just constantly messes up with one thing after another. All of which I fix. Then I get about a month and then it's something else again. Brake light switches, headlight switches, fcabs, rtabs, the shock towers mushroomed and cracked, it tells me I have a tail light out when I don't, the door cards are crap, the glove box is sagging, the guibo shredded apart, the transmission tunnel insulation just started coming out and rubbing on the driveshaft, the strut mount bearings blew and needed replaced, the window regulator needs replaced because the driver's window works intermittently, when it rains it leaks into the car, the exhaust hangers needed replaced, the hood struts blew and needed replaced. I could go on with even more crap and I've owned this e36 m3 for about 8 months. I understand it's an older car and was going to require work but how is it that all of this crap just constantly keeps failing...maybe it's at the point in it's life where everything is just going to fail and need replaced and I'm going to spend triple what it's worth just fixing it back up. Maybe I just got unlucky. I owned my Subaru WRX for 6 years and never once had one single thing ever go wrong or need replaced besides regular maintenance and wear items. IDK why I sold that things

It's just something you have to expect when you buy a used sports car for cheap. It's usually that the PO did some pretty funky stuff with that car and didn't care if it was bad or not. By funky stuff, I mean the kind of stuff where you smack yourself on the head and thing "how the fuck did he manage that?".

If I didn't buy my gen, it would probably end up like your e36 m3. Bumper was JB welded to the body, fingernail scratches on drivers and passenger door cards, strange stains on the seats, scratched headliner, scratches in places on the car that you didn't think could be scratched, swirl marks in the paint, and a shift knob that looks like he gouged his fingernails into it. I've since fixed most of these problems, and found a plastic dressing that covers up the scratches on the door cards, but I bet you that if he owned that car for any longer that it would end up a faulty ass POS in no time. You also need to take into account that a lot of BMW drivers, and M3 buyers are not car enthusiasts, they just wanted the car for it's symbolism, and usually thrashed the shit out of them.

maintenance costs are a huge factor for me so I am going to stay away from the european breads. Ive driven volvos, my brother has had a saab and an audi, my friends drive audis etc.. and they are all way to expensive to maintain. Im really digging the IS300 so I think thats where this is heading. need to find a manual one with an lsd

Get a genesis coupe then. Cheap ass maintenence, the Rspec has 4 piston brembos up front and 2 piston brembos rear, torsen LSD, easy to mod, cheap to make quick. You might have to finance on though
