Jesus fucking christ are people retarded.
There is a guy on a Prelude board who claims he's going to build this amazing car, but doing an exhaust is a daunting task. Did I mention he's planning on doing this to an automatic Prelude, when the factory auto transmissions are documented and known to fail with stock HP levels with less than 20k on them?
Here's a quote, so you can all enjoy my frustration.
Originally posted by playludescMy rationality for dumping this much money into the car is that after all the modification, this car should have the durability, looks, and feel of a brand new car. It will be an incredibly high performance sports car, able to keep up with just about anything but the most expensive factory vehicles. With the right transmission, she'll be able to rival $100,000+ cars (Porshe, anyone? How sick would it be to pull up to a 911 and waste it?). FWD is a limitation that I acknowledge, but for street driving, pushing that limitation is beyond dangerous in either layout. I'll have all of that for less than $20,000. And it will be a blast getting there.
(Don't worry, I'm also strongly considering putting only a few thousand into the 'lude and getting an S2000 in a couple of years.)
As far as the custom transmission, I'm just not sure what the $4500 is going to buy yet. Maybe it will be a bad-ass auto, maybe it will be a bad-ass manual. At that price point, I can buy either. I just haven't made up my mind yet.
The goal is to DIY everything I can. I won't be able to sleeve the engine or port and polish the head, and I'm not sure I'll ever trust myself with a transmission build. The exhaust will be a border-line task. I feel like I could develop the welding skills to do a good job on the exhaust, and maybe even create my own custom header (queue the infamous DIY header pics). For part two of that question, 2.5x2 = 5. 5>3. I'm still learning about exhaust scavenging and how having larger pipes can sometimes be detrimental, I'll be sure to post what knowledge I gain. I might pay a local shop to mandrel bend the exhaust to my specifications.
I'd love to open up the hood, point at the entire bay and say, "Yeah, it's custom, and I did 95% of it myself."
As to why I don't want to do it on a dyno, I don't drive on a dyno at WOT. I drive on streets in a usually legal manner. Why would I tune the car for one, highly limited purpose and then use it for something else that in reality is very, very different? Besides, why pay if I don't have to?
EDIT: Just in case you were confused on the point, the plan is to just boost on the stock auto trans till it fails. I'll probably put a cooler and an inline filter on it though, since I can probably move those over to the new transmission and lose no money on them.
