Honestly, as much hands on practice as possible. The exam has actual simulated routers that you have to setup. It's miserable, and requires a lot of work. I can't think of the exact book I used/we used, but I know I have 2 of them.

Get Cisco Packet Tracer if you have access to it. It's an easy way to simulate any and all cisco products that the software has. Also simulates the terminals and everything.

The major issue with the CCNA is that it's proprietary to Cisco. Some of the ideas and tech they use is similar, but because they like using proprietary stuff, some things conflict with regular networking.
