I used to save as .png but my files were huge, so I went to jpg, which was fine for me, but flickr compresses a lot more than it used to.

I just save the height or width (whichever is bigger) as 1000 pixels and it's generally around 1MB. I don't see the need for any bigger on flickr imo. Save for web is the key.
