You will find that almost NO maintainance free compressor will suit your needs if you do any kind of heavy use of air tools. Even with say a 30 gallon tank with a single stage maint. free compressor you may not get all your lugs off without waiting for a recharge with a good impact. If your looking to be serious I'd get a 50 gal , 2 stage compressor.

20gallon is small. its good for small things like air brushing and filling tires haha, I have one as a backup in my shop and its good for a couple tires.

60gallon minimum

Here goes:

From what I have learned about air tools nothing is cheap. My dad has a 26 gallon compressor and it works good for air ratchets, impact guns, cut-off wheels and things of that nature. That compressor was about $250 which isn't bad.

The problem is its not meant for a high volume of air. I know your looking for something that can flow the amount of air needed for a paint gun, and I honestly don't think you will find a compressor that will fit that need for your intended price. As small compressor is good for the weekend warrior mechanic because they can do basic things with it.

If everyone could go out and get a compressor for $300 and be able to paint with it, body shops would be in a lot of trouble. Its just not possible to make a compressor big enough and flow the amount of air required for a paint gun at that price.

If your looking for a compressor to just do minimal tasks and not paint with it, I would just get a 26 gallon compressor.
