I know absolutely nothing about Sony lenses, but I mean I don't see how a 50 1.4 could be that hard to screw up. I say buy it. 50's are amazing lenses to have.

I see. It's £246 for the 1.4 and there have been a few on ebay for around 100-150 (Near new condition). I've seen a 1.8 version around, but i don't know much about it. Much of a difference between the two?

The 1.4 has a higher aperture, which means it will allow more light in, will have a shallower depth of field when wide open, and has a nice bokeh wide open. I would say if you can afford the 1.4 get it, instead of kicking yourself later wishing you had it.
