 A super-shallow depth of field will always have a lot of blur around the object that's in focus. However, he could have changed his camera settings to put even more things in focus, which would cut down the blur.  And it definitely helps you appreciate the more pro shit you see on the innernets. Read up on aperture and go from there.
 
 You may even end up buying a DSLR if you like it enough! Although, these days, there are point-and-shoot style models that come very very close to being DSLR-quality.
