Fuck the government and their bullshit. These GT-R's that don't meet safety spec are about to be allowed legally into the country in several years but they are illegal now. Magically at age 25+ everything becomes safe(as far as the law is concerned), leading to the conclusion that we should have been able to import the shit to begin with.

Nah it is 25 years because then you pretty much have to be a car enthusiast that is after a classic car, since 25 year old cars usually require a lot of attention.

If they allowed these cars in a lot earlier, there would be people flooding the market with imports.

We have the pre 1989 rule, which used to be the 15 year old rule, but with the years more and more cars of interest became 15 years old and people were importing them left right and center, so to prevent that from happening they froze the date at 1989. They should hopefully revise that some time soon as it has been 9 years since that rule was put in place.

Right, but the Federal DOT will crush an enthusiasts R32 but on 1/14 (one year from now) they will not crush and scrap the same enthusiasts car assuming it is an R32 from 1989. It makes no sense to have arbitrary laws that they will act so irrationally on when obviously the concern isn't the safety of the road. If safety was a concern they wouldn't be allowed at all.

The reason for the crushing of the car would not be the car itself, but the actions of the individual importing the car.
Until the car is 25 years old it is illegal to import, therefore the individual that imported the car 1 year too early has broken the law and should therefore be punished. And generally cars that are illegal to import and do not comply with road standards get sent to the crusher.

I don't agree with these type of laws, but I understand how they work.
