Could just be a bad MAF then? If it is on its way out regardless it is unlikely cleaning would do a ton. From some brief reading seems it is a somewhat common issue on e46s and does have some of your symptoms. Check all the wiring to it, could just be a loose/fraying wire providing a faulty signal?

Could be, I just don't know. Don't want to replace it, and have it turn out that I didn't need to.. Need to find a local E46.
