I feel you on wanting to spend more on the project car. Mine won't be done this year.
Yeah man, 2008 fit sport with like 30k miles is 11k, will cost pennies to maintain, and will run forever with little to no problems while getting 35 mpg's +.
A 2008 MS3 with the same miles would cost 15-17k, will be expensive to maintain, and could have more potential issues while getting 22 or so mpg's.
Washed, clay bar, and waxed my car tonight. Ready for a local show tomorrow with some college homies. All I have to do is wash it when I get to SoWo and it will be looking mint.

I love these damn wheels. Just need to space the rears out 3mm or so and then I'll be real happy with it. The rears are flush, but I want them to just poke just a little. Trying to keep it classy.
