The battery in the key for my e39 is dead, remote lock doesnt work etc. I keep reading that the key charges by itself whilst in the ignition but it obv dont as it its dead lol. New key time or can the battery be replaced?

My key does sometimes that i need to use it on driver door lock and after that works again.. battery can be replaced, you just need brutal force to cut the key in half and so on.. easiest way go by the dealer, buy new one(in finland it was around 140€) and you are done.(Dealer does the coding shit also so no need to worry about that..)
And also yes key charges it self when in ignition. but batteries go dead over time..
You need a long drive to get any sort of good charge brew...try only using the key manually for a few days and it should have some charge time cracking
