he was actually right in using "an".

it doesnt matter at all whether the first letter of the next word is a vowel or a consonant, it depends on whether it sounds like a vowel or consonant. You wouldnt say "an union" just like you wouldnt say "a eye ex (IX)".

it just bugs me when people confuse the use of a/an
