unfortunately for our egos, if you are using compounding interest to make your fortune (or your retirement), it is smarter to put your money away as young as possible to end up with a better result in your retirement years.

Unfortunately, that may mean conforming to the "American dream" and wasting your entire life in debt, while then handing your debt to your children and their children and so on.

Thus, do not conform, build cool as shit cars and enjoy life.

Oh, I am anti-debt. The only thing I don't have paid off is my house.

But yeah, I am still trying to find the balance between spending enough on hobbies to feel rewarded for earning the money I make, and also saving a portion for an uncertain, but likely future of retirement.

or would it just be better to get a newer canon DSLR that did video? mine is the pre-video rebel xs

I made the jump to Sony 1 year ago and I will never look back. By far the best decision I have ever made for photography. If I were looking for a crop sensor right now I'd get an a6300, you can find them used pretty easily. Best bang for your buck crop sensor camera out right now IMO.
