GS= General Schedule. White collar tech, admin jobs. salaried stuff.

GS jobs have a series of planned pay raises, 10 in total. raise 1-3 come every year 2 years for step 4-6 and 3 years between 7-10. 18 years to max out your pay grade.

Unless you plan on doing management expect on staying at a GS 11-12 pay grade.
You can do an out of cycle step increase too.

You can max that shit out in like 5 years.

Number=pay grade (more monies on a scale of 1-15)

GS11 starts at about 64k in our area and tops out at around 80k.
GS12 starts at 74k and tops out around 90k.

We get "step increases" every year, which is about 1500 bucks. You usually start at step one and can make it to 10.
Every year they have bonus's, paid time off, or an extra step increase for top performers (if there is money).

Oh and a COLA (Cost of living increase). Usually 2-3% every year, but its been like 2.2% the last 6 years Obama has been in office. We are probably all going to get like a 4-5% increase right before or after the upcoming election.

We get FERS for retirement and TSP.

FERS is 30% (if we stay 30 years) of our top 3 years.
TSP is a 401K like program with up to 5% matching. I do 5% so they match 5%.
Anyone else wanna tell me the same thing again?

        But word, makes sense.

I'm good where I'm at though. Love the work, and seems to be easily competitive in pay, benefits, and advancement.

          TLDR

working for the government is great, especially if you work hard and are willing to make a few sacrifices for advancement. Going TDY for school, training, and moving for promotions.

          • hopefully Ill be able to go over to italy for a few years.

Get my regular pay + COLA + BAQ.

GS12 is like 68k a year over there, COLA is like 15k, and BAQ (non-taxable) is 35K a year.

Saw a GS12 job for the Marshall Islands but I wasn't ready, fucking suuuuucks.

I was offered it because they didn't have shit for bonus money, Since I was so close to a step 2 i opted for ATO of 40 hrs.

                          Yep.

She's probably going to get an easy job like a gs7 bank teller or some shit on the base for travel/fun money.
