crap. going back through the steps, I see it says to "mount" the image to desktop when creating the USB boot flash drive. I copied and pasted it from the downloads folder to the desktop... then followed the rest of the steps

I was extremely suspicious of the 250MB snowleopard .dmg I downloaded... how could an OS only be 250MB? i'm guessing what I downloaded is an update package. fuck I just need the hardcopy CD damn it this USB bullshit can make like a tree
