  • Why cars? Some food for thought.

Today I reflected on why I have gotten myself into cars. I can't quite put a finger on it, there's just something about this hobby and lifestyle that differs from the others I have been involved in. I'd say the lifestyle at least has affected me just as much as my military lifestyle has, in good ways and bad.

Stanceworks to me is a community for enthusiasts who aren't worried about the price tag on ones wheels or car, not worried about out-doing one another. No. Stanceworks is in my opinion, a non biased community of mostly true enthusiasts who genuinely have a passion for what they are doing. No matter how much mechanical knowledge, money, or experience, most of us have grasped the concept that this hobby and lifestyle are meant to be enjoyed, and not to be something to stress over.

This thread isn't about my life story though, so what do you people think? What got you into cars? Was it something you picked up from a parent? Did it fall into your lap? Was it a friend or older sibling?

I just wanted to give everybody some food for thought, so none of us lose sight of what this is all about.

Looking forward to reading the responses.

My father is a huge classic car enthusiast and had basically flipped car after car until he got his '63 corvette stingray. Growing up around this made me learn to love cars as a collectible entity. I'm a huge BMW freak and own or lease 4. I like to think my father had something to do with my car habit, and I thank him for it every time I see him.

Definitely interesting. My father also got me involved, although very indirectly through selling me his car after he got sick. Interesting that he flipped cars to get a '63 Stingray!

It was over many years and mostly when he was younger. But his stories and perseverance really inspired me.

Much like a lot of people my dad would talk about cars, show me all the ones he had, show me stuff when he was fixing the family cars and I would go to his work and stock parts and talk to his customers about stuff like that. Pretty cool when you're a youngin.

Now it's sort of an escape to go work on the car and not worry about other stuff and turn the car into what you want it to be, i'll always appreciate guys who build cars on small budgets a little more just because it shows they try to do whatever they can do get their car to the vision they had. I also enjoy the bigger builds just because of the fabrication and skill that goes into that I can't do myself.

My grandfather was a chauffeur in fairfield county in the '20s, '30s, and '40s. Test drove a car at Datona, i forget the rest of the story. Anyway he passed the car hobby on to my father, who grew up with hot rodders down the street in the '50s. My dad has always collected and restored cars, and took me along to shows as soon as I could. I caught it from him, but also because I grew up in the country where having a vehicle was key and making it your own was what you did...

                I was born for cars.

I know this because I've sat in cars the same way forever.

                This was then:

                This is now:

No, but seriuosly, my dad was a car nut ever since before I was born. I grew up with (slightly) modified cars and reading car magazines (especially modding magazines). I live and breathe cars.

                    It was innate.

Before I was even speaking in full sentences, I could sit outside on my front porch with my parents and rattle off makes and models like nobody's business. Something about them just intrigued me.

Fast forward to my driver's license, and it's a love that's only grown since then.

I'm sure it'll get even worse when (if) I can afford nice cars.

I have no idea how or why I got into cars but I'm glad I did. They're just about the only thing keeping me going nowadays. It's been one of the few goals I strive to meet and why I'm so determined as a person.

I've started out playing with toy cars and tonka trucks before I could walk. One day as I was sitting on my mom's lap, watching cars go by on our porch, I finally muttered my first word, repeating what she was pointing out. I was actually surprised when my mom told me that my first word was car.

I've collected hotwheels and matchbox cars for as long as I can remember. The hobby evolved when I bought my first car and began working on it. It evolved again when I decided what I wanted my career to revolve around.

Couldn't explain how it all started, just glad it happened.

Needed a hobby to blow all my money on.

                            lols

Seriously though, I grew up and my dad always had a car he was tinkering on. I remember his 86 Ford Thunderbird Turbo and shortly after that his '94 Mustang GT. Spending time in the garage with him was always time well spent. 12 years ago we got snowmobiles and we always tinkered with them.

I ended up going to school for Automotive and the rest is really history. I worked in a shop for a little over a year before I decided to so something else but cars will always be a hobby I hope to pass down to my children.

My story:My passion also came from my father. Coming from a low income but not poor family growing up wasn't so bad you learn to enjoy life without having money. So that being said my dad always had a hunch for cars. Since I was a little kid I remember him having his 1974 Ford Mustang 2 I believe. (could be off a year or so) With a 302 4 barrel carb, and cam'd, with full exhaust. I recall when he would showup after work and it was about little over a 1/4 mile stretch where the turn was from the corner to our house. You could here this beast just rumbling as he would turn the corner. Coming down the stretch and screaming all the way down, and vibrating the floor. But as all good cars they have an end. Car ran out of gas one day on the freeway and was tottaled from behind my a semi I beleive. So after awhile as i grew older working and looking at cars just grew on me. And about 4 years ago my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, he went throught all the surgeries and chemo therapies and is now healthy. (thank you jesus) So after that he was fired from his job, because well because the cancer. They just didn't tell him to his face. (assholes) my dad was left without a job. So my dad having knowledge and mechanic skills he basically started to work on his own fixing cars. So as time went by I started to work with him, and the time i spent with him fixing cars, I took it as our father and son time/ bonding with each other. Because well growing up my dad was always there, but also busy keeping me and my siblings supported. So I basically took advantage of that time and spent it with him. And well thats where I knew this loving car deal and whole hobbie and lifestyle came upon me. I have model cars and hot wheels and magazines where I would dream of owning different cars and fixing them up to my liking. So their is my food for thought. It's not all there because I'm pretty sure i forgot some things. Thank you dad for passing on this passion for cars. (i think im going to cry)
