American Hatchback, like an early VW golf or Audi 50?

Frequently, I see a silverish looking hatchback driving around town which I know is not a VW or Audi, but it somewhat resembles both in style.
I really have no other info, but I cannot find anything on google that looks similar. For some reason I want to say its an american car like a chevy, but that doesn't really make sense either...it looks like late 70's early 80's.

It has squarish headlights but not totally square, but definitely not round. I know for a fact that it is not an audi or vw
