  • To part out or fix, thats the question.

Last summer, my automatic transmission in my E36 325is went out. So I fixed it, and everything was peachy. Driving home from college Friday, the car felt - odd. I get off the highway then BOOM! gear box light comes on and goes into limp mode (stays in 3rd gear). Exact same thing that happen that summer. Did some research and the only way to fix it would to replace the transmission...and hope it does't break like the second one.

Im in college, and don't have a job. I called my mom and told her my situation (cars in her name) and she said oh well basically. Talked to my dad and he brought up the thought of getting another car. So im left with these options:

    1) Part out the car, engine, all my performance/suspension upgrades, interior, body parts, ect. I invested about $1800 in upgrades and would hope to get $3000 from the part out then buy another car.

    2) Somehow come up with money to replace the transmission in a 93' with 150xxx miles on it. (doesn't seem worth it to me).

Cliffs: tranny broke again, part out and get a new car or replace it.

It's really all on you, you can keep the car running for as long as you like but it ain't gonna be cheap of course and you're eventually going to wanna move on.. so i vote part out. change is good sometimes!!

Can you do it yourself? I feel like those ol getrags can be had cheap. I know they can for e30s, a similar tranny.

if you can find a new one and do the work yourself i say go for it, but otherwise i would start parting it. if i were you, i would put a number in your head, and if your prices for a new trans and work go over it, you know to start parting and to move on to new things

I can replace the transmission (i need a special tool tho to align it so that would be $200) or do a 5speed swap myself within a few weekends. Its just the fact that no job = no money. Plus the car is getting high in mileage and im not sure it would be worth fixing it at this point. The engine is strong and everything is golden, its just the transmission keeps failing.

Another problem is, the cars in my moms name and I still owe her ~$2000 for it. My grandpa is paying her since im in college so im not sure how stoked he would be if I part it out at this point.

The good news is that it only goes into limp mode every once in awhile, but it slips going up hills. So its "drivable" to get to point A to point B at the time. Im hopping to keep it and the problem to not get worse for a few more months or until the cars completly payed off. Then part it out.

          Anybody interested in parts awhile?
EVOsport underdrive pulley, Turner Motorsports Chip, Bavauto performance coils, raceland coilovers that never touched the car? I have everything you need for a complete obd1 swap as well as interior parts and body parts.

Moms idea of high milage. She brainwashed me into thinking its a lot. In reality, 150k miles on a M50 engine is not high. Those shits go for eva.
