  • WRX or A4??

    Hey everybody,
Like the title states I'm trying to decide what car to purchase an Audi A4 (B5) or a Subaru WRX (Second Gen) I'm in the market for a new car because I'm going to college in the mountains and the winters up here get pretty rough. I personally love the styling of both cars and would be happy with either one, however my main question is which one is more reliable? Also if anyone has any experience with them which one would you recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

if youre wanting a reliable all wheel drive car for extreme weather conditions and mountain roads, i would go with Audi. with their track record with low maintenance cost and dependability, its a sure win.

i would not buy an audi S4.. I had some trouble with them.. rear wheel bearings shot because low. and some engine problems.. turbo, camshafts etc

but I heard that the 1.8 turbo is a great car.

and the impreza, well a friend of mine has one, and he's happy with it?

I've been doing a little research of the perspective forums of each of the cars, and it seems that all around the WRX is a little more reliable and people are happier because its a little more sporty than the A4. But I still can't decide, I love the looks of both of them especially after a few minor modifications.

I was once weighing both of these options (although I prefer bug eye subies...)

I had a rust bucket of an Mk4 Jetta tdi as a daily and needed something else, while still keeping the tdi...

My thought process was that I wanted something that was quick, which subie had the edge on. I also started to think that if I had the a4, i would want to drop it on air ($$$), but if i had a wrx, I would slam it static ($$). I wavered for a while. Went to look at some A4s, went and test drove a Legacy GT... and then my Mk4 got t-boned. I would have gotten a WRX, i think, but I now have a Mk5 jetta tdi tyo play with...

Yeah, I think I've decided that the WRX is a better option for me

Be warned- WRX's are infamous for the "glass" transmissions.

Be warned- A4's are infamous for going through coil packs like a pack of cigarettes.

I would personally get an A4. More plentiful, more likely to be found in better condition (every WRX within a 10 mile radius of Rochester has been beaten within an inch of it's life, and most A4 owners are less hoonigan and more adult), and the fit and finish on any Audi is superior to most Subarus.

That said, WRX's do have a sportier feel to them, and can be made quicker for a little less money- but are also prone to be money pits.

VAG cars from the B5 generation are huge pieces of shit. The only people that say they aren't are the people that own them and let their love for the car overshadow how bad it really is.

Several years ago I read a Consumer Reports article stating the B5 A4 was rated worst in reliability in a comparison of recent used luxury cars. I tried Googleing that article, but I can't seem to find it.

I'd get a WRX. I love my 05. It seems that whenever I see someone working on their A4, they usually have to take the entire front end off to get any room to work. Not a fan.
