so i was on here a little over a year ago, starting a build thread... then the car i was working on started leaking oil like it broke water (was told B5.5 tend to do that after awhile). Had a lease for that time until few months ago, had to get a car last min when the lease was up, a "sensible" and reliable car to daily but keeping fun, mods all that in mind.

so i got a good deal on a "newer" car with "Sport" pedigree, an 08' R56... would love to work on it, to my fullest but i am really discouraged that its AUTOMATIC!!! i always told myself Sport cars = manual... now i creep the blog often, seen lots of different cars and styles.. seen plenty of Autos but they were mostly on wagons, and 4 door cruisers. so whats the point blank on sport cars with automatic... i have always frowned on the idea, but being kinda stuck on the other side of the fence, my hands are getting itchy and im 'bout to just say fuk it and start work.

(im sure threads like this come up as often as people asking for tire stretch digits, just felt like i should ask a car guys community.)

Alright, well think of it this way. If you really prefer manual over automatic, you can always perform a transmission swap. It will take a bit of time and effort, as well as the funds but it's up to you. Just start working on the car and swap the tranny while you're a it!

First of all autos are awesome. Just don't go making it a track car. Focus on styling with a side of sportiness.

When I think of auto I think of class and ease of use (VIP cars, big body sedans, etc.) and manual cars as more sporty and fun. Maybe do something that blends a little of both?

It's one thing to have a car that only comes in an automatic. It's a whole different story if you have the option of buying something with a manual transmission.

It all depends on what you'll be using the car for. Daily driving in the city? Sporty driving around town? Potential ground-pounder for autocross?

I would say get something with a manual for two key reasons:
1- Manual transmissions will give you fewer problems in the long run, and are quite difficult to ruin if you know what you're doing
2- It makes the car much, much more engaging to drive. You're not just pushing the gas pedal, you're actively working to keep the car moving around, which is fun.


Personally, I will only own a manual transmission. Just my personal preference. I know guys who will only drive automatics because that's what they like. (Or they're too lazy to learn how to drive a manual transmission car)

i don't see how someone else's opinion of your transmission makes a difference as to whether or not you modify your car to your personal tastes.

there will always be dickwads who will try to make you feel bad for owning an automatic. for that matter, there will always be dickwads who will try to make you feel bad no matter what car you own or what modifications you want to do to it.

My daily has a 5 speed transmission. I love driving it and where I live in the winter it makes a world of difference. Being able to gear down and maintain control is so much better than relying on abs and traction control and all that shit.

On the other hand, my big old Mercedes has an auto transmission and even though it's sort of a luxury car, I wish it was a manual. It's got a big ass v8 for an engine and it would be awesome to be able to drive it the way I do with my other car.
